Fuzzy Felt Moomins on DVD at last!!!, 2 Jan 2006
Here we have on DVD at last one of the greatest children's TV shows of all time. Last seen in the UK in 1986, it is with great delight and pleasure to be able to watch this magical enchanting series again. What can I say? Words simply cannot do the program justice. It is the best TV series adaptation of the moomins ever made. The animation, story and music is spot on. It perfectly captures Tove Jansson's haunting books. There are 100 episodes of moomin magic in English and if you get tired of that you can watch the original uncut 78 episode German version with English subtitles. All presented in a lavish 7 DVD box set. Go buy it now, you won't regret it!

This review is from: The Moomins - Vol. 1 [DVD] (DVD)
Wonderful stuff. Beautiful animation that sticks very closely to the original stories. This first volume covers most of 'The Finn Family Moomintroll' (you'll need to buy Vol 2 for the last 6 episodes of that story).
Although it was broadcast in the '80s (in the UK, at least), the style of the production is *very* 70s, possibly even 60s. It just has that look and feel to it. If you're a fan of the childrens' animations from that era (Bagpuss, Clangers, Hector's House etc), you'll probably appreciate this. Only the title music of the English language version says "80s".
The picture quality is about the same as I remember it being on its original broadcast, ie good if ever-so-slightly fuzzy. I strongly recommend checking out the German language version as well - the picture quality there is *fantastic* - super-sharp - and there is significantly more material. The music is different, too, sounding at times like the sort of thing you'd hear in a 1970s documentary about a nudist colony.
The only thing I found to annoy me is the way the narrator plays Snufkin as a hippy, like Dylan in the Magic Roundabout. Oh, and he plays a flute instead of a mouth organ. Those minor niggle aside, I'd strongly recommend this both to fans of animation and fans of the original Moomin books.

All hail the moomins!, 5 Jun 2008
At last the box set has arrived!!
Well worth every penny; if you saw these as a kid you will know why. And its definitely suitable for your kids :)
It seems there has been no restoration work done on the prints as there is a little bit of damage to the prints, i.e. a few scratches etc, but it doesnt spoil the fun.
These are the abridged versions that were originaly shown on British TV, the German versions are included as well. These are slightly longer, but I just cant wrap my head around moomintrol having a German accent... it just doesnt sound right somehow! Apparently the original Polish versions were a lot longer, but they may not get released. Who knows.
Anyway, dont hesitate, order a copy today, its every bit as good as it was back in the day, definitely worth your money :)
