This is the last book with Moomin strips by Tove Jansson. Her brother Lars officially took over after this. Maybe this is why this book only contains three stories, the least amount of stories yet in this series. The quality has no dissipated, though. The first story, where the Moomins can't hibernate and stay awake in their house along with a plethora of differently-tolerable guests, is witty and jabby. It reminds you that being as stoic as the Moomins can and does have its disadvantages for them.

Then we have a story where the family, along with Too-ticky, travel on a ship. Anyone who has read the Exploits of Moominpappa will see that this story borrows heavily from said novel, with Niblings, the ship's name misspelled and even down to the cloud. Of course, it's a quite different story altogether, with pirates and an altogether different-looking Edward the giant (and not to my liking, I'm afraid).

Finally, we have a story about the Fuddler (the Muddler's son) and his troubled courtship with the Mymble, who of course is only interested in difficult men. When her latest flame turns out to be a psychiatrist, neurosis sweeps the valley (particularly Filijonk and the Inspector).

These stories are fine and the art is as delightful as ever. Nevertheless, you can kind of feel that Tove was running short on ideas at this point. If you've followed up on this series, this is a worthy purchase. To the casual, though, I can't say I recommend it to the utmost.

Fun but the Publisher Slipped Up 15 Oct 2010
By Robert R. Hudson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm an avid and indiscriminate Jansson fan (I love all her books) and am grateful that the cartoon strips are now available. Thanks to Drawn and Quarterly for having gone to the trouble and expense of compiling this outstanding series.

Yes, the cartoon strips are a different world than the books. The strips, rather than being children's stories that adults love, are social satires, wholly appropriate for the daily newspapers. They must have been one of the few comic strips to achieve that level of farce and social commentary. They comment on many of the fads and cultural obsessions of the 1950s, including UFOs, social clubs, self-help, family vacations, Hollywood starlets, consumerism, gurus, spies, keeping up with the Joneses, and psychiatry. They are wry commentaries, albeit loving, about our human foibles. Despite their quirkiness, the Moomin magic and charm remain. Many critics go so far as to proclaim Jansson to be a forerunner of the modern graphic novel.

My reservation about Volume 5, however, is in the production, not the content. The publisher seems to have done a sloppy job compiling the strips because in two places, strips are incorrectly placed. Panel 44 of "Moomin Under Sail" (page 44) is actually a duplicated panel 44 from the first story, "Moomin Winter" (page 18). The real panel 44 from "Moomin Under Sail" is, therefore, missing. Also, panel 80 from the final story, "Fuddler's Courtship" (page 81), is a duplicated panel 80 from the second story, "Moomin Under Sail" (page 53) -- which means that two complete panels are missing from the book. This is sloppy production work -- and I'm hoping that Drawn and Quarterly will make the missing panels available to readers who would like a REALLY complete edition of Moomin: The Complete Tove Jansson Comic Strip.

The land of enchantment 21 Aug 2010
By H. Culley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
When the Moomins broke on the literary scene, little did their author expect her charming stories and illustrations to become the midcentury successes they did. A graphic artist, this prolific creator illustrated her own stories with bold, sensitive, balanced black and white pictures. How easy was the jump to the newspaper comic pages!
This, the last volume of the comic strip she drew and wrote herself (her brother took over for her), contains all the elements I love in these modern adventures. Longing for old times and faces overcome by an afternoon's sea swimming. Unrequited love conquered by true afinity. Illustrations rich in botanical detail, historical detail, amusement.
