MOOMIN arrives in a lovely, Deluxe Anniversary Edition, which houses the original five volumes of Tove Jansson's MOOMIN series, in a single, ultra-cool and ultra-classy Deluxe Edition, that comes in a lovely, hardback cover, with a Moomin imprint on the front, and it's all housed in a lovely thick, cardboard slipcase too!

For those who haven't been able to purchase all of the original releases from Drawn & Quarterly, starting way back in December 2006, this is an excellent release, that lets you buy all of Tove Jansson's original work, in one complete volume, for a quarter of the price.

Admittedly, the nine, thin original volumes do look nice together on a shelf, when stood-up side-by-side, this Deluxe Edition is still a worthy addition to any Moomin-fans collection. Moreso, for those who didn't or couldn't keep-up with the manner in which they were originally released - which was a little erratic to say the least!

One of the major benefits, is that the Deluxe Edition has the errors and incorrect cartoon strips, corrected for this edition! See the following weblink for the notes about these errors...

http://drawnquertenly.blogspot.co.uk/2010/08/mistakes-in-moomin-volume-4-and-5.html

So, no need to send-off for sticky-backed errata slips, or to have missing, or incorrect strips placed in the wrong position. Now you can read the tales of Moominmamma, Moominpappa, Sniff, Moomintroll (aka Moomin), the Snorkmaiden, The Hemulens, The Snork, Little My, Mymble, and The Hattifatteners exactly as they were meant to be read: uncut, uncensored and properly translated!

This collected volume really is delightful. It comprises the complete Moomin comic strips as drawn by their creator Tove Jansson, and best of all they have all their errors corrected. This I have to admit was something I was worried about as I know the individually published editions had a number of pages which contained errors, a problem which the publishers corrected by offering replacement pages to be sent to buyers. Thankfully Moomin is in all his perfected glory in these humorous tales of Moomin Mama and Papa, Moomin, The Snork Maiden, Snufkin and Sniff and the rest of the inhabitants of Moominvalley and beyond.

The book is predominantly black and white (which is because the original strips were produced for newspapers) and thankfully nobody thought it would be a good idea to colourise them. This would have been a major disaster. All five original collections are included and they emanate a delightful mix of humour and gentle satire, played out beautifully in the delightful style of Jansson. Even in these fairly simple illustrations, the clean lines of her penmanship are a joy. No mark is made that shouldn't be there and she captures light and texture so well in what can be a difficult medium to work with.

The same can also be said of her writing too, the simple and yet pointed tales are also very poignant. Tove Jansson dearly loved the Moomins, and this comes across in her early scripts. But is interesting to know that she finally became enslaved to them.

An excellent volume with very nice clean illustrations. I thought there would have been a bit more extra, considering this is supposed to be a deluxe anniversary edition, but it's still nice to see some of the character sheets drawn by Tove Jansson.

Does look very cartoon strip-esque so will have to be read to the little one. A substantial book.
