Pat Boone's clean-cut good looks and boy-next-door image always seemed at odds with his early rock 'n' roll hits; most of which were covers poached from black performers - reworked and presented by his record company (Dot) as more commercially viable if fronted by a white vocalist during the mid to late Fifties. However, Pat turned to updated ballads for his subsequent albums with a few new romantic songs thrown into the mix and satisfactory sales confirmed he was on the right track as he widened his fan base to include those who also enjoyed his movies and television appearances.
Sepia has already delved into such appealing collections via two "2 on 1" reissues but Pat regressed to the pop idium for this pair of early Sixties albums with MOODY RIVER, a Chart-topping US single for Pat, ideally included in the same-titled 1961 album which reached #29 in the US Charts. In fact, blending covers of popular songs by others - ANGEL ON MY SHOULDER, THE GREAT PRETENDER and WILL YOU STILL LOVE ME TOMORROW? etc.with standards BLUE MOON, GEORGIA ON MY MIND and I'VE TOLD EV'RY LITTLE STAR - the latter trio already pop-assessed by others but all nicely rendered by Pat. Add the tender waltz LOVE MAKES THE WORLD GO 'ROUND from Bob Merrill's Broadway hit, CARNIVAL, is a perfect choice with the album's orchestra conducted by Marty Paich in commercial mode.
Released the previous year, GREAT! GREAT! GREAT! also honed a cache of covers of other singers' hits with STAGGER LEE, EL PASO, RUNNING BEAR, CATHY'S CLOWN and THE WAYWARD WIND following up the singles success enjoyed by Lloyd Price, Marty Robbins, The Everly Brothers, Johnny Preston and Gogi Grant respectively. This concept thread continues throughout the album, with his old orchestral mate and Dot Records music-maker, Billy Vaughn helping to prove that together with the other album, Pat had not forgotten his own pop roots!
Adding five bonus singles, including THAT'S MY DESIRE, BOURBON STREET BLUES (from MARDI GRAS) and Pat's lower-placed charter (#62) WANG DANG TAFFYAPPLE TANGO helps maximise playing time, with Sepia's excellent remastering, notes and high-level presentation makes this a noteworthy release.
