Product Description

Product Description

Schools, colleges, and universities all over the world are installing Moodle, but many educators aren't making much use of it. With so many features, it can be a hassle to learn – and with teachers under so much pressure day-to-day, they cannot devote time to recreating all their lessons from scratch.

This book shows how to bring your existing notes, worksheets, resources, and lesson plans into Moodle quickly and easily. Instead of exploring every feature of Moodle, the book focuses on getting you started immediately – you will be turning your existing materials into Moodle courses right from the start.

The book begins by showing how to turn your teaching schedule into a Moodle course, with the correct number of topics and weeks. You will then see how to convert your resources – documents, slideshows, and worksheets, into Moodle. You will learn how to format them in a way that means students will be able to read them and along the way you will learn plenty of shortcuts to speed up the process.

By the end of Chapter 3, you will already have a Moodle course that contains your learning resources in a presentable way. But the book doesn't end there… you will also see how to use Moodle to accept and assess coursework submissions, discuss work with students, and deliver quizzes, tests, and videos.

Throughout the book, the focus is on getting results fast – moving teaching material online so that lessons become more effective for students, and less work for you.

About the Author

A physicist by profession, Ian's career has always focused primarily on communication and learning. Fifteen years spent in private industry designing communication systems software eventually saw Ian concentrate on the development of accessibility and learning aids for blind, partially sighted, dyslexic, and dyscalculic computer users – whilst also working part-time as a math and science tutor. Teaching only part-time meant not spending as much time with his students as he would have wanted. This and his background in learning and communication technology seeded his interest in virtual learning environments.

I have read quite a few books aimed at the new Moodler and this book stands out from the rest. The book assumes absolutely no prior knowledge or experience of Moodle and the introductory pages clearly set out what is covered, who the book is aimed at and why the reader should consider using Moodle in their professional practice. The book follows a logical sequence to develop the reader's understanding of Moodle, its facilities and how to use them to deliver the reader's course materials in an engaging manner.

The author introduces each new step in creating a course within Moodle by describing the steps to develop a real Moodle course that he actually uses himself in his own teaching practice from resources that a teacher or lecturer would typically already be using. The basic course is then enhanced by using Moodle's facilities to support multi-media delivery, on-line assessments to aid the learning process and engaging learners via on-line communication and collaborative group work.

Lastly, the writing style of the author is very engaging which, together with the content of the book, makes for an enjoyable introduction to becoming a proficient Moodler.

This book aims to help teachers who have never used Moodle before, to start getting some of there teaching material online; and then to enhance them using multimedia; and then, perhaps, to start using more of Moodle's activities.

I think Ian Wild does this very well. The book is well written and well paced. The style is engaging, and the range and order of Moodle features covered is well thought out. Ian shows, by examples taken from one of his courses, why and how you might want to use the features in your course.

There are some things I would quibble with. For example Ian insists on opening all links in new windows, which is just wrong (it's Number 9 in this list of web usability mistakes:[...]). However, these do little to detract from the book's goals. Altogether, I think that this is a very useful addition to the library of Moodle books.

I should note that I am a developer, and therefore nowhere near the book's target audience. I would like to read opinions from the people the book is aimed at.

Exceptionally helpful 5 July 2009
By Fred J. Woolley - Published on Amazon.com

Ian Wild's "Moodel Course Conversion" is truly a helpful "Beginner's Guide" for converting a traditional course to Moodle. He presents a series of thoughtfully selected topics that are key to any course conversion, presents them in easy-to-understand sequences and language, and includes a valuable "What Just Happened" review paragraph after each technical presentation. It became my "bible" for my first course Moodlization.

It would be better if the index was enlarged in order to be more inclusive for beginners. However, the author does mention in several places that he assumes that the reader has at least an elementary knowledge of Moodle. I found myself having to take time to refer to Moodle's support site for some of the basics required to take full advantage of the book.
