Book Description

7 Jan 2011

Mood mapping simply involves plotting how you feel against your energy levels, to determine your current mood. Dr Liz Miller then gives you the tools you need to lift your low mood, so improving your mental health and wellbeing. Dr Miller developed this technique as a result of her own diagnosis of bipolar disorder (manic depression), and of overcoming it, leading her to seek ways to improve the mental health of others.

This innovative book illustrates:

* The Five Keys to Moods: learn to identify the physical or emotional factors that affect your moods

* The Miller Mood Map: learn to visually map your mood to increase self-awareness

* Practical ways to implement change to alleviate low mood

Mood mapping is an essential life skill; by giving an innovative perspective to your life, it enables you to be happier, calmer and to bring positivity to your own life and to those around you.

‘A gloriously accessible read from a truly unique voice’ Mary O’Hara, Guardian

‘It’s great to have such accessible and positive advice about our moods, which, after all, govern everything we do. I love the idea of MoodMapping’ Dr Phil Hammond

‘Can help you find calm and take the edge off your anxieties’ Evening Standard

‘MoodMapping is a fantastic tool for managing your mental health and taking control of your life’ Jonathan Naess, Founder of Stand to Reason

5.0 out of 5 stars the best form of self help 21 Jan 2010
I bought this book, because I was feeling suicidal, and had been recommended to see my GP. The GP referred me to the local mental health unit, which had a long waiting list (which I am still on) for whatever therapy they could offer.

Meanwhile I read Mood Mapping and did a lot of the exercises in the book.

You will find in the book exercises that work to help you discover what mood you are in, and strategies of how to navigate between your various moods.

This book is full of ideas and techniques, that have yet to be discovered by mental health professionals. This has occurred because the author Liz Miller is a sufferer herself, and by sheer bloody persistence, has worked a way out of her mental disease. She has written up the strategies that she used to get well, and uses to keep well. So this is her gift to us to help us on our path from mental illness, to being able to function in life, and be relatively happy for more of the time. Liz has successfully used these strategies to go from being sectioned under the Mental Health act, to being voted Mind Personality of the year.

I would encourage everybody to read this book, whether you suffer from mental health problems or not.

For sufferers it will help you get strategies that will help you cope with life, and for those fortunate enough not to suffer, will give a greater understanding to yourself of how you work emotionally.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical guidebook not just theoretical jargon 11 Nov 2009
Well this is the first book I have read for many years and I managed to finish it in a week. It has lots of good advice for those with bipolar, family members (like me) and even just for people who want to improve their outlook on life. It is very practical and has detailed tasks and plans to follow. This is definitely a detailed guidebook to follow, rather than a reference book to refer to. So if you want to improve your moods, and really want to do something about it, read this book. If you are just after knowing more about bipolar then there are other books that may do that better. Just another thought - Liz Miller's life and accomplishments are amazing - so it is also a very interesting autobiography.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Practical Self Help Book That Works! 13 Oct 2009
How many self help books promise the answers, and then leave you to work them out for yourself? Finally, a book that is written by someone who is clearly an authority, yet is reassuringly easy to read and follow. Dr Liz Miller writes with warmth, humour, and an openness that is so refreshing and encouraging. As a therapist myself I encourage anyone who is looking for a way to manage their moods, rather than have their moods mange them, to look no further. Here you will find a system that is clearly explained and simplified to help you every step of the way. Excellent book!

5.0 out of 5 stars At last !! 5 Dec 2009
This is the book I have been searching for ! Dr Liz Miller uses plain english and real life examples to illustrate how Mood Mapping can be used a method to change your life. I have BiPolar Disorder and for the first time in 13 years I feel optimistic about the future and less burdened by my illness. I have only been using the Mood Mapping method for about 14 days, but the improvement in mood and confidence has been dramatic! Unlike Psychiatrists and medication, this book has no negative side effects!

I was so pleased with the book, I emailed Dr. Miller to say thanks and she replied within 24 Hours.

Do yourself a favour - buy this book! Dr Miller delivers some great advice, partly based on her own experiences in life.

An absolute 10 out of 10.

4.0 out of 5 stars `Mood is the background against which we work.' 16 May 2010
By Jennifer Cameron-Smith TOP 500 REVIEWER
Regardless of how you are feeling, whether you feel energetic or lethargic, anxious or calm, your mood affects the way your mind works and your overall outlook on life. It stands to reason, then, that most of us would like to reduce periods where moods and energy levels are low so that we can be more creative and productive.

This book provides a number of self-help tools that can assist. I like the mood mapping and tracking suggestions which can enable patterns to be recognised and, where required, addressed. Self-awareness is essential: learning to identify the physical and emotional factors that affect mood is critical for any of us who suffer from mood disorders. Identifying the triggers that can impact on mood (and what to do) is also important. Mapping mood and energy levels is a great starting point.

At the core of this book is a practical fourteen day plan which, for me, makes a lot of sense. The author of this book, Dr Liz Miller, developed these techniques after being diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder and they have apparently served her well. The key, though, is self-help. If you want better understanding of mood and its role in your own quality of life, then this book may assist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dots little helper 10 Sep 2010

I have 2 copies of this book at the moment which are always in use. As a mental health nurse i find this book a valuable resource for people with bipolar disorder, anxiety and depression. Clients that have used it have also praised it and even gone on to buy this book themselves. You can work through it from cover to cover or use extracts from it and apply it to situations.

Best thing i have bought in terms of my work, it is easy to read and apply and not overloaded with jargon - Thankyou Dr. Miller :)
