For once the word 'surreal' is fully justified. The original title, 'Froth on the Daydream', is better because this really is like a dream - a twisted version of reality in which nothing quite makes sense, but everyone acts like it's perfectly normal.
The sheer weirdness can be alienating, and it wasn't helped for me by the feeling that it was stuffed with references and jokes I wasn't getting (an annotated version, put together by someone who knows the cultural landscape of mid-20th century France, could be fascinating). However, Vian manages to engage the heartstrings by making his central couple very sweet, and what happens to them really quite heartbreaking. Ultimately, it's a book unlike anything I'd read before - and how often can you say that? - and one that lingered in my mind for a long time.

Honestly, I think the translation of this is off. Little things like calling skin "epidermis" in situations where a native English speaker wouldn't. Quite a few other things like that. It was disappointing because I was so distracted by the language choices that I didn't enjoy the actual story as much as I would have otherwise. If only I spoke French...

A good book, but not a casual read. This book is full of surreal and beautiful images. It is also dark. If you want more information, read it.

This book is very, very difficult to get into. Although the language and imagery is beautiful it drags on relentlessly. This is one case where the movie is definitely better than the book. The movie is in French but well worth watching.
