Product Description

Product Description

Millions of tourists visit the ancient Egyptian sites annually and are inspired by the ruins. Yet it is impossible for them to photograph the ruins adequately: the sites are overrun with tourists, photography is forbidden in various locations and amateur cameras cannot correct the perspectives of the monuments. Meanwhile no book currently exists of professional-quality photographs specifically portraying the monuments. It is many decades since the Egyptian sites have been systematically photographed on large format photographic equipment. Jeremy Stafford-Deitsch has visited and photographed the major sites as well as little-known locations such as the desert oases and the Fayum. By working in the summer he has also managed to photograph the sites without a single tourist appearing in the pictures. Innumerable books have appeared over the decades dealing with the culture and artefacts of Ancient Egypt. This is the first large-scale book in just as many decades that does justice to the prime source of the visitor's interest: the monuments themselves. With 120 stunning colour photographs and accompanying text about the major sites, this book should fully reflect the magnificence of Egypt's greatest monuments.

About the Author

Jeremy Stafford-Deitsch studied Egyptology at University College London. He has published five natural history books illustrated with his own photographs, on the subjects of coral reefs, mangrove ecosystems and sharks. T.G.H. James is a former Keeper of Egyptian Antiquities at the British Museum. His numerous publications include Egypt: the Living Past, Egyptian Sculpture (with Vivian Davies) and Ancient Egypt: the Land and its Legacy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, 7 Sep 2005
By G.Reed - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Monuments of Ancient Egypt (Hardcover)
This book, brimming with gorgeous photos, encompasses various ancient Egyptian monuments, as promised in the title. The photos are printed on glossy, high quality paper, and most of them are wonderful and unique shots. This is a wonderful addition to any ancient Egyptian library, and a great book for those who enjoy not only Egyptian art, but general architecture and photography. Not your average picture book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like being there, 16 Jan 2010
By Jansen Standt - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Monuments of Ancient Egypt (Hardcover)
A visually stunning publication, although the book could have covered a few more important sites. The written text could have been more extensive, but on the whole the clarity of most of the photography is of a good standard.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent addition to your library on Ancient Egypt, 2 Jun 2002
By Arahila "asrd1" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Monuments of Ancient Egypt (Hardcover)
This work complements and expands the areas covered by such books as "The Complete Temples of Ancient Egypt" by Wilkinson. Many of the photos are from seldom seen angles and expanding your knowledge of each structure.
