This latest work by Herve Champollion is a massive, oversized book on a subject, Paris, that never ceases to intrigue and delight. The book is beautiful with several fold out pages that make "reading" only possible on a large surface like a table. The photos, like other examples of Mr. Champollion's work are without peer. Paris is a major love of this photographer and he has been able to find vantage points that the casual traveller would never have access to. That being said, there is little new in this book other than its size ands hefty price tag. In 1988, Mr. Champollion published a smaller (in size) but far richer book, "Paris" or "Vivre Paris" in its original French, that captured the City of Light in far more detail and flavor. Looking at "Paris" makes one itch to check the flight schedule and contemplate the choice of hotel for an imminent trip to Paris. While out of print, the previous book provides far greater pleasure than "Monumental Paris" and is better printed (in Italy not Malaysia) and after 22 years ( bought my copy in 1990) is still in excellent shape unlike the new volume which is showing signs of wear and tear after only 3 days. While there is a signed print in the new book missing are any details of the cameras and lenses used in shooting the pictures. Nice to look at - but not worth owning.
