Product Description

From the Author

"Weary of monuments to generals and politicians it seemed to me we should have monuments to babies. These poems are founded on that idea" ... Labi SIffre

About the Author

Labi Siffre is an English poet, musician, songwriter & singer. His first book, "Nigger", published in `93, was followed by "Blood on the Page" in `95 & "Monument", in `97.

His work has been compared to William Blake's "Songs of innocence and Experience" & described as "compassionate and often succinct and aphoristic", "multi-layered, often challenging their own apparent stereotypes and preconceptions".

"In one of Labi's poems, "An Audience Request", he writes - 'Show us the world / Rub our faces in it / Show us the hurt / And our place in it' - and that's exactly what a poet should do" ...Benjamin Zephaniah.

Musically, Siffre is best known as the writer & singer of "(Something Inside) So Strong", "It Must Be Love" & "I Got The ..." His music sampled to successful use by the likes of Jay-Z who used Siffre's "I Got The ..." for "Streets Iz Watching" & the rhythm track with Siffre on electric piano is the basis of Eminem's "My Name Is". Siffre's music & voice were sampled by Kanye West for "I Wonder" & Fat Boy Slim & Wu Tang Clan have also used his work.

"Inspired and provoked by the usual things: life, love, death, nature, the universe I expect, on my death bed, to be, as usual, exploring existence through writing ... if I can tap the keys or find my pen; and perhaps only babies should be allowed to vote".
