Original and Epic Metal from ex members of Extol & Selfmindead 26 Mar. 2007
By Mike Wright - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I heard about these guys online from the Extol myspace page and bought this online after hearing the samples and i love this record. Benea Reach are a group of 6 musicians, including Ilkka Viitasalo of Selfmindead and Christer Espevoll of Extol. I am still trying to get used to it as this one takes a while to fully digest, but is awesome. The music is a mix of really heavy mathy metal and post hardcore, but with the feel of the newer Enslaved or other Nordic black metal and alot of post-rock ambience. I notice a lot of similarities to Meshuggah and Botch, but with the technical thrash aspects of Extol and the Post-Hardcore of Refused, but with alot of ambient clean breakdowns, intros and outros. The vocals mostly alternate between Higher shouts and lower growls, kindof like a combination of the vocals of Isis and Refused with alot of melodic background vocals. Ilkka(vocals) has come along way from the high pitched yelps of Selfmindead. This album takes a while to get into, but it is well worth it and if you are already a fan of their past bands, you cant pass this up. For fans of Meshuggah, Botch, Refused, Mastodon, Enslaved, Isis, Extol, etc...

Extol Fans, BUY THIS CD NOW!!! 14 Dec. 2006

This is my favorite metal cd of 2006. For a while it was 'Specs of Pictures Burnt Beyond' by Zero Hour, (an absolutely amazing display of extremely melodic, but heavy progressive metal.) The last few weeks 'Erasing The Goblin' by Mortification was in heavy rotation in my cd player. Months ago it was Drottnar's 'Welterwerk', (what may have resulted if Pink Floyd were a progressive death/black metal band.) Anyway, this is about Benea Reach a band I had never heard of until I saw a small blurb on Extol's website saying to check out Benea Reach. I looked into the band and discovered that Christer Espevoll, one of the guitarists who left Extol a few years back, was in this new band. I must say the Extol is one of my absolute favorite metal bands, when Christer and Ole Borud left Extol I had serious doubts about the band's future. Thank God that was put to rest with the excellent 'Blueprint Dives'. Seeing that Christer was involved with a new metal band and after hearing a clip from the band's website I ordered the cd not knowing what to expect. Man am I blown away!!! This is some amazing stuff, I do not have a bad thing to say about the music. My only issue is there are no lyrics. As for the music the guitar riffs are HEAVY and intricate without being overly complex and the guitar solos are kept to a minimum, not a bad thing because the rhythm tracks are so good you do not miss solos. The drummer is excellent and the singer grunts, screams and screeches marvelously. On top of the great musicianship the songwriting is top notch. If you are into extreme metal bands like Extol, especially the first few cds, Believer, later Living Sacrifice, Becoming The Archetype and Aletheian you should love this cd. I can not wait to see what thier next move is.

I am really diggin' this album so far. It's beyond the generic metal that pervades a huge sector of the genre, yet it's not so far out there that it becomes an annoying parody of experimentation or anything like that. It's actually a rather refreshing album. I'm just sad that I only recently found out about Benea Reach in light of their breakup earlier this year. The first track, Ground Slayer, threw me off somewhat at first. It shifts between heavy, heavy riffing and lighter segments, albeit still with screeching vocals (which are very well executed I might add). The next few tracks that come after Ground Slayer seem to blend together in a way, though that is not necessarily a bad thing. There is most definitely enough difference on a track by track basis to keep the listening experience interesting, especially on the latter half of the record. The record is over an hour long, around 67 minutes to be exact, and is a well rounded effort from a sadly disbanded groups of great musicians that satisfies throughout. Highly recommended.

I like the album. It's not my favorite, but it has a very unique blend of elements. I particularly enjoy the rhythmic elements.
