Book Description

'I am the Ryder Cup, I suppose' Colin Montgomerie

For twenty years Colin Montgomerie has been Europe's go-to guy in the Ryder Cup. He has been the catalyst, the leader, the closer. The man they call on to take down America's big guns, the man they turn to when a win is desperately needed to steady the nerves. Now in the twilight of his career he has one last role to play: In 2010 he is Captain of Team Europe in their quest to regain their trophy.

Montgomerie's record in golf's showpiece tournament is unparalleled. Since 1991 he has performed in eight Ryder Cups, winning five of them and has never, ever been beaten in a singles match. He is the most talked about European golfer of his generation but, agonisingly he has never managed to win one of golf's major championships.

Monty's Manor gets right inside Colin Montgomerie's history with the Ryder Cup from his debut in 1991 right up to and including the drama and excitement of this years contest in Wales. Iain Carter has had unprecedented access to key players on both sides of the pond, caddies, coaches, friends, foes, rivals and reporters. Through their eyes we look back on two decades of successes and near misses. It is through them that we get to see the real 'Monty'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling climax 7 Dec 2010
By Janks
Format:Hardcover
I'm not a massive golf fan - a bit like "Dave in pub" who Carter quotes as only giving a "stuff about golf when the Ryder Cup's on". But I do enjoy the drama of a great sporting occasion. So I wouldn't be a typical reader of a book on golf. However I thought I'd give this one a go, given the compelling story that is Colin Montgomery. There's no doubt that had Europe lost the Ryder cup the last chapter would have described him as a perennial loser. However as we all know that wasn't the case.
Sporting occasions are often difficult to capture in writing but Carter manages to bring his excellent radio commentary to the written word. The final chapter of the book particularly captures the essence of the struggle, both between the teams and also with the wet Welsh weather. It's a thrilling climax to what we can now describe as Monty's successful career and Carter gives us the full benefit of his "insider" access to tell the whole story in an uncomplicated, readable, yet thorough way. If you're looking for a present for the father/mother in law who likes any sport - but especially golf, you can't go wrong with this book. And if you're looking for something to read on the train/beach you won't be disappointed.

I found this book to be incredibly insightful on Monty, his character and his unique Ryder cup exploits. I have never been a big fan of Monty, but this book really helps you understand the man and the golfer.

This is a great read and even though you know the outcomes of the tournaments described, Iain Carter brings fresh air to memories and I found it hard to put down.
