"Spamalot" is explicitly proud of the fact that it is lovingly "ripped off" from the classic film comedy "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." Directed by Mike Nichols, the show has a book by Python's Eric Idle and a whole bunch of new sons by Idle and John Du Prez. Now that the production has won the Tony Award for Best Musical for 2004-2005, we can only imagine what will happen when "The Life of Brian" or "The Meaning of Life" are transported to the stage and another nail is driving in the coffin of Western civilization. All I know is that the first time I saw "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" I never laughed so hard during opening credits in my life (even with three of us sitting in two seats in the front of a Volkswagen rabbit--appropriate, huh?), and they do not have opening credits in Broadway musicals so I think the film still comes out ahead on that score.
"Spamalot" looks again at the legendary tale of King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table, who dance when ere they're able, they do routines and chorus scenes, with footwork impeccable. Throw into the mix French people, a cow, a killer rabbit, and the Holy Grail and wackiness ensues. The cast is headed by Tim Curry as King Arthur, David Hyde-Pierce as Sir Robin, and Hank Azaria as Sir Lancelot. Then there is Michael McGrath as Patsy (and a myriad of other roles), Steve Rosen as Sir Bedevere, Sara Rameriez as the Lady of the Lake, and Christopher Seibert as Sir Dennis Galahad, the Black Knight and Prince Herbert's Father (the idea is keep true to the spirit of Monty Python and have a core cast do most of the nonsense and then bring in chorus girls to distract audiences from the inept dancing).

I have just listened to the cd and it is fantastic. It doesn't matter if you are a "python" lover or not. Fantastic song writing, arrangements, great vocal performances and the production on this cd is first class. Tim Curry is as always delivering a great vocal performance, as are the rest of the cast. It is brilliant. Buy it, you wont be dissapointed!

The songs are excellent. Great melodies, new and old Python songs. Funny but with underlying social criticism and the great message that you should live your life like you want to. Find your Grail ! After I heard the CD I bought tickets for this year's show in London. Something to look forward to.

A very funny, Flesh Wound inducing Musical 'lovingly ripped off' from the 1975 film Monty Python & the Holy Grail.

All 24 Tracks on the CD are 'varry nice' tunes and give you a good idea of what the Musical is trying to do.

A lot of the songs are send ups and parodies of big musicals and composers i.e. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Broadway Schmaltz tradition.

Some of the cast on the album are quite well known actors and make a good job of the songs:

King Arthur - Tim Curry (Rocky Horror Picture Show, Muppet Treasure Island)
Sir Galahad - Hanz Azaria (The Simpsons, Along came Polly)
Brave Sir Robin - David Hyde Pierce - (Niles in Frasier)

Some stand out songs on the album for me are;

Fisch Slapping Dance
The Song that goes like this
He is not yet Dead
Knights of the round table
His name is Lancelot

If you like Monty Python or comedy in general or your name is Dennis check this album out and definetley do so if you plan to see a production of Spamalot.

Ni!

An absolute classic Python musical, which we Brits will finally get to see this year, as it's being launched at the London Palace Theatre.
My particular favourite has to be 'You Won't Succeed on Broadway'. Any song with the lines 'There's a very small percentile/Who enjoys a dancing gentile' has to be a classic, in my book!

You have to know what you're getting when you approach Spamalot, but for any Monty Python fans or lovers of the show this cd is absolutely essential! So many wonderful tracks including the fabulous Find Your Grail, Run Away (Can can style) and of course Once in Every Show. Definitely buy this if you have a sense of humour and like show tunes.

It arrived yesterday and brought back memories of a very funny evening spent in the theatre. The booklet that was with it
gave all the details and the lyrics of the songs which made you just want to sing along with it especially the closing number.A brilliant
C.D.of a very funny show.

Even if you didn't see the show on Broadway it's great fun listening to the songs.
Eric Idle did a great job there - again! And the cast is brillant. What else is there to say? Just buy it and listen to it again and again and again.... it's unadulterated fun :)
