Everything here - seventy-seven minutes of music - was recorded in the 70's, arguably Caballé's glory years when she made her finest recordings and gave her best live performances. She is accompanied by an array of four of the finest conductors directing four British orchestras and the Rome RAI orchestra in recordings under the supervision of some of EMI's finest engineers. She is singing extended excerpts and arias from the operas of two composers who, along with Donizetti, afforded the best opportunities to deploy the strengths of her miraculous voice: the long, floating, legato line, delicate coloratura and breath-taking - for the listener, not for the singer - pianissimi. Occasionally the demands of the Verdi cause her to inject some screech and harshness and too many glottal emphases into her singing but by and large one is astonished by her ability to negotiate even heavier roles such as Lady Macbeth, even if she cannot eradicate memories of Callas. Some of the excerpts here are from three of her complete opera recordings for EMI, the most famous being her "Aida" under Muti and the "Don Carlos" for Giulini and ardent collectors will probably already own them, but it is nice to have this anthology as a handy reminder of her strengths.

As I write, this is available for almost nothing plus p&p. In these days of dearth, we are unlikely to hear her like again so these performances become more valuable as time gos on, especially as the sound is so good, despite being forty years old. Caballé herself will shortly be 81 - a pleasing fact in itself for her legion fans insofar as she has several times over her career suffered bouts of poor health.

The World's Most Beautiful Voice 25 Aug. 2010
By Claudia N. Davidsen - Published on
Verified Purchase
Everything the first reviewer said is true. If there is any doubt in your mind that Montserrat Caballe possessed the most beautiful voice in the world during the period of 1965-1975, listen to this EMI issue. To take it another step, cuts 4, 5, and 6 on this CD were taken from a 1980 I Puritani (conducted by Manuguerra). Disproving all the rumors and predictions of her vocal demise in the late 1970s, Madame's voice is in primo condition, and her 1980 Elvira is beyond superb.

Look at the playlist to see what you are getting. It isn't vast, but there is more than an hour of great stuff from Bellini and Verdi here.

This is a digitally remastered product of 1988. Good job, because the fidelity is most satisfying--true, balanced and completely nuanced. This is true even for the material from 1970.

You can't go wrong with this purchase.

Caballe at her best 2 Jan. 1999
By A Customer - Published on
Granted, she may not have the dramatic fire and insight of Maria Callas, but she does possess what may arguably be the most beautiful soprano voice of the past 50 years. These recordings represent Caballe at her peak -- early 1970's -- and proves that her technical control was indeed a thing of wonder. Listen to Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking scene; this could very well be the best-sung version on record. Not to mention the gorgeous pianissimo high C at the end of "O Patria Mia." A valuable recording for fans of Caballe and of fine singing.
