This book is the fourth in a series which sees the hero Montmorency graduate from the sewers to espionage. In this book, Montmorency seeks to avenge the death of his best friend, Lord George Fox-Selwyn.
To enjoy this book, you need to read the first three Montmorency titles, Montmorency, Montmorency on the Rocks and Montmorency and the Assassins, all of them set in the late 19th century and early years of the 20th century. This is one of the best Montmorency books because of the disputes that are settled and a terrific cliffhanger ending. The character I like most was Dr Farcett because of his guilt and how he overcomes it to regain his sanity (he develops a mental illness after a terrific shock at the end of the third book). Montmorency himself experiences a brilliant showdown in the sewers of London.
A book of dark intrigue, drama and revenge. It takes you from Scotland to England to America and back again in a breathtaking journey of high adventure. Truly amazing!
