Product Description

Product Description

Simon de Montfort, the founder of England’s Parliament, was the greatest knight and foremost military strategist of his time. Friend of Saint Louis, thorn in the side of the Plantagenets, he was chosen Viceroy by Prince Richard’s crusaders and the Christian lords of Palestine. He served as Senechal of France for King Louis’ heir, but rejected the Crown of England, championing instead the New Millennium of democracy preached by Dominican and Franciscan friars.

Was he also to father of King Edward I? It was the gossip of the time, and there is some
persuasive evidence.

This was a well written piece, full of historical fact and left me wanting to know more. I knew a basic history of Simon de Montfort and have visited his original burial spot in Evesham. I feel this helped him come more alive for me in this story. The story itself was pertinent and to the point - no faffing around with unnecessary details or background but with just enough to give you a feel for the age and atmosphere Simon was in. However, the downside to that is that I felt in places it 'jumped' from one scene to another; very occasionally there was a lack of 'flow'. I do say occasionally however and this didn't detract from a good story that left you feeling you could 'see' Simon and feel his emotions. Always the sign of good book! Look forward to reading the other parts of the story.

What happens when a good researcher is mated to a good story teller?

You get "Montfort," Katherine Ashe's brilliant fictionalized biography of Simon de Montfort.

Ashe uses her skill as a story teller to put flesh on the historical skeleton of Montfort, brought up in the French court, heir to a British earldom, brother-in-law and confidant to a Plantagenet king -- and lover to his wife, soldier, would-be crusader, talented administrator and founder of England's first parliament.

In the process, she brings to life the 13th Century world of courtly love and religious prejudice, royal economics and churchly strictures, the conflicting claims of affection, honor and loyalty.

She also writes great battle scenes.

"Montfort, The Early Years -- 1229 to 1243," which takes Simon from his first encounter with Henry III to his appointment as guardian to Henry's son, shows Simon's many contradicitons and the forces that motivate them. Ashe uses her impeccable research not only to limn his actions but to make the motivations she imputes believable.

Couldn't put it down 19 Aug 2010

This thoroughly engrossing blend of historical fact and fiction (supported by historical fragments) brings to light the life of a man worth remembering. Almost eight centuries after his death Simon de Montfort's life and work still hugely impacts the world we live in. Katherine Ashe has done a remarkable job of bringing this 13th Century hero into focus as a human being of the ages. The first volume was well written and impossible to put down. To label this book historical fiction is like calling filet mignon meat-- true to a point, but inadequate. I am anxiously awaiting Volume 2. Thank you, Ms Ashe, for your delightful portrait of this remarkable man!
