Fans of Penman, Chadwick and Gregory take note! 2 Jan 2012
By Book lover - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is an excellently researched and written historical fiction of Simon de Montfort . However, it is much more than a historical story of England and its sad history of pathetic kings . The fascinating under current of this history details the English and other countries road to the worlds current political and financial situation. This excellently documented history details the major destruction encompassing a country when the leader is inexperienced and egotistical . The actions of a poor leader, along with idealistic and greedy compatriots can damage a country and its people for generations. Ms Ashe has used her ability to see the ideals Montfort gave his life for in a light that can benefit all who read this book. All fans of the above mentioned authors will love this book along with readers of history and political savvy . Highly Recommended .

Flawlessly rendered ,brilliant complexity 20 Mar 2012
By Anne J. Ryan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The final books of the Montfort series were flawlessy rendered. Such a complex tale could easily have foundered. But Katherine Ashe never once said good enough in the formation of this brilliant work. There is fidelity to every harsh aspect of 13th century warfare and every delicacy of 13th century wooing. All is faithfully created making this work something to be re read and savored several times. In truth I dragged my feet for weeks before I read the final chapters. Knowing the ending did not make me dread it less.Montfort had become that real.
That the tale never loses momentum is gift in itself but the color and shape given to the terrain, the ambiance of castle and fen and battle field, the sensuality of Edward's relentless seduction of young Eleanor, the intransigence of the blinded lords , and the unfolding of the spiritual and religious dissent that helped to drive the tragedy are woven with exquisite skill.
This is a truly inspired work in the very best sense of the word. I commend the reverence for language, history , life and spirit that is so much a part of this work and this author.

Montfort, vol.4 30 Jan 2012
By Darlene M. Petri - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I thought the 4 volumes of Montfort would last me all winter, but swept along with the story I finished them in, figuratively, in one breath. The story of Montford and his fight to establish Parliament is exciting, captivating. The ending is history, not a fairy tale and not the ending I hoped for. But what he fought for has lasted to the present day, Montford left the world a better place than he found it. How he did it despite the obstacles he faced throughout his life are what make his story worth 4 volumes and the effort to read them. The volumes are well complimented by the author's notes and the Historical Notes at the end of each volume, tying history and the author's understanding of the events together.
