Vila Matas "Montano's Malady" is not like anything I've ever read. It isn't especially gripping, but it is a wonderful account of a man suffering from 'Literture-sickness". This sickness involves the narrator explaining his son's sickness of a similar sort, only to find later that the son doesn't exist and it's only part of another story, this time supposedly true, about the narrator's own true 'Malady'.

Whilst this is going on the narrator begins a diary about certain authors also afflicted with literature-sickness. If you are a fan of literature or, even better, a fan of authors obsessed by literature, this book is for you. Authors from Kafka to Coetzee to Sebald are spoken of. The story moves from Barcelona to Chile and places in between.

I didn't LOVE the book, but I liked it a lot. And the writing is wonderful.
