I bought this after searching for an insulated jacket to see me through the winter. It came down to this or a Snugpak Sleeka jacket. In the end the Montane won out as the jacket is cut a little better and looks less military.

The Montane is a well thought out jacket, the waist features elastic drawcord to cinch it in tight and keep draughts out. There are two handwarmer pockets that are large enough to hold an OS map or Amazon Kindle. These pockets have insulation front and back so are good at keeping the old sausages warm.

The collar has a nice fleecy chin section which prevents reddening of the chin, which is a common occurence when condensing breath dampens the inner collar on a jacket and it rubs the chin raw. Round the back of the collar is a wired hood with volume adjuster and elastic drawstring.

As a bonus one of the handwarmer pockets has a zipper pull on the inside, the jacket can be stuffed into the pocket (after is have been turned inside out) and zipped up to make a compact little square, perfect for an impromptu pillow.

The outer layer of this jacket is a sort of ripstop material but is very thin and verging on being shiny. I had initial concerns about the resilience of this fabric, whilst it has fuzzed up a little it has not ripped on me, something I am pleased about.

I don't baby this jacket, I wore it out climbing a couple of evenings ago in a cold wind, it performed wonderfully and kept me warm when it was my turn to belay. The jacket is cut well for this and never got in the way of my harness. It looks pretty cool with chalk dust over it too. It held up better than the skin on my hands

As the insulation is man made it still keeps you warm when wet.

I bought this jacket to use on the run because I wanted something a bit thicker than a usual running jacket for running when it is icy cold. The jacket label actually said it was designed with runners in mind as well as moutaineering etc although I must admit to having a few doubts when I opened up my wallet.

Certainly it has functioned perfectly well for the purpose I bought it for. I wear it under a merino wool underlayer and it keeps me dry and warm but without getting overheated when the temperature has been close to zero.

It's comfy to run in, (no painful seams or sticky-outy bits) the pockets are much much bigger than most running jackets (partly the reason I chose it). It doesnt have as many reflective strips as a typical runners jacket but that doesn't affect me.

I think given the price it's a really good buy, and looks like it will be hard wearing.

I needed a new jacket for Hillwalking and didn't have the spare cash to opt for a good quality Goretex jacket. I liked the look of the Montane Prism and thought I would give it a go, but didn't expect much out of it. I went up the Highlands at the weekend and the jacket was excellent against high winds and dried very quickly when it got wet. I would recommend the Montane Prism to anyone who is looking for a good outdoor jacket at a great price.

Being a big guy, I went for the XXL however this was too neat & snug to allow any reasonable movement; really frustrating given the rave reviews!

I'm not King Kong by any means but at 6'3" with 48" chest, it would have been nice to find that they made a jacket for me.

They must be excluding themselves from a sizeable (no pun) part of the market.
