I have many DK Eyewitness and AA travel books as I like the colour photos. I know that not everyone wants the same from a travel book, but I like to look through these types of books, find things I'm interested in and then do more research on those places. When I looked at the "Look Inside" on this book (and The Yellowstone & Grand Teton book) it starts off with lovely full colour photos and so I incorrectly assumed that this is what the book was like all the way through. How wrong was I! The colour photos only go up to page 24 out of 502 pages. I am sure that the book is very informative and I will certainly be reading it to get some ideas on places to go..... but I do feel disappointed as it was not what I was expected.
I guess that I am writing this review so that others don't make the same mistake that I did.

Montana: Moon Handbooks 30 Sep 2009
By Barney Considine - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I especially like the Moon travel guidebooks published by Avalon Travel. There are twenty on my shelf of travel books; two for Utah canyonlands and the rest covering states. All except one (Southern California) have proven to be good sources of information. They are sufficiently different from the travel books published by the American Automobile Association that the two work well together. In general, the Moon books cover the attractions better and AAA is better for lodging. However, Moon sometimes comes up with that historic hotel or unique coffee shop that AAA misses.

Montana is my family's home state and we have explored most of it. Most Montana towns are relatively small; the handbook says that 451 people live in Broadus where I went to high school. Moon gives Broadus a page and a half. It doesn't miss much. That can be said all across the state. Few other travel books can make that claim.

Likewise, Moon does justice to Butte, one of the larger towns in the state and arguably the most interesting. Moon covers Butte's mining history in an introductory section and has an 8-page section covering the attractions, lodging, food, recreation, entertainment, and more history. Travelers will also find separate coverage of Anaconda, Philipsburg, and the Pintler Scenic Highway; excellent additions to the Butte attractions.

Such coverage is typical of the Moon Handbooks. Their directions for finding attractions are usually clear, including the hours of availability and cost. Where appropriate, there are descriptions of hiking and biking trails, state parks and monuments, federal and state forests, fishing, festivals, and many other special interests. Often, Moon will provide the story behind the attraction. The books are arranged by section and the locales within a section are presented in the order that a traveler might be passing through. There is a map at the beginning of each section and more detailed maps of major communities.

Whether planning a trip to Montana or using it as a reference as you tour the state, the Moon Handbook will serve you well.

I decided on this travel guide for my much anticipated first trip to Montana after previewing and reading reviews of MANY guide available on Amazon, and so glad I did! We used this book daily, and found it to be accurate, up-to-date, and complete with info on even the more remote locations in the state. Combine it with the Compass guide and you will have great resources to get the most out of your trip!
