Product Description

Product Description

A guide to the best walking and trekking routes on both sides of Mont Blanc (Monte Bianco), in France and Italy, based around Chamonix and Courmayeur. 50 day walks are clearly described and also 4 short multi-day treks for Vallorcine to Plaine Joux, the Tour des Aiguilles Rouges, Vallorcine to Servoz and a circuit of the Italian Val Ferret. This new, updated edition features 50 new, larger scale route maps. Mont Blanc is the highest mountain in Western Europe and this area is the world capital of mountaineering. It is a sublime landscape of glaciers, high snowy summits, flower-decked slopes and rocky trails to satisfy any hiker. The author is a locally-based British guide and photographer and a real expert on the range and here offers lots of extra background information about the region, including hut etiquette, local transport and suggested activities for rainy days.

This is a wonderful guide to the walks on the French side of the Mt. Blanc area based on the Chamonix valley. Loaded with mouthwatering pictures, plenty of detail and advice and, even better, some of the history of the region which has gone from a remote, pastoral valley to a thriving mecca for outdoor adventure seekers of all sorts.
The author clearly knows the area like the back of her hand - I thought I knew the area fairly well, but I've learnt an enormous amount from browsing this guide and can't wait to put some of the information to use.
There's enough material in here to also provide for a day or two of rainy weather reading if, as happens, the weather does not co-operate.

Use with care 22 July 2010
Format:Paperback
Having sampled some of the suggested "walks" on site I can say that although the instructions are essentially correct the descriptions of the terrain must be interpreted with care. Terrain that is "flat" to a climber may be quite strenuous for an "average" walker. It is therefore advisable to study the contours on a detailed map before setting out.

Great guide 6 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
My wife bought this to go on a walking trip to Chamonix and was very pleased with its clarity and detail. She spent a week walking with a friend and found the guide very helpful and totally accurate.
