Book Description

They say that behind every comedian lurks a tortured soul…

Yet, comedian Henry Black finally has everything he’s always dreamed of: a thriving career, and a wife and daughter who he loves more than life itself. After years of struggle, he finally has it made.

Until three men force their way into his home, killing Henry and destroying the safe, comfortable world he has built for his family.

But that is only the beginning of his hellish torment. He wakes in purgatory, where he’s met by two men, both offering a choice. Randall offers a chance at heaven. Boothe, however, offers something far more tempting—a chance to go back to his life.

A chance to see if his family is okay.

For Henry, there is no choice. He accepts Boothe’s deal. But with every deal comes a price: his body is twisted to match his sins, and Henry is no longer the man his wife remembered—Henry is no longer a man at all.

He is monstrous.

Thrust into darkness and madness—unable to be with the people he loves—Henry embraces his new form, and his new supernatural abilities, and does the only thing he can: avenge his murder. But as Henry grows closer to the truth of what happened on that terrible night, he grows further from his humanity.

How far will he go to seek revenge?

And is he willing to sacrifice his soul?

From the authors who brought you Z 2134, Yesterday’s Gone, and ForNevermore, comes another dark tale sure to keep you waiting for the next episode.

About the Author

Sean Platt and David Wright are Kings of the Serial, with their ambitious schedule of releasing a book per week in 2012.

With more than 200 five star reviews, their post-apocalyptic serial, "Yesterday's Gone," has drawn comparisons to Stephen King's "The Stand," ABC's "Lost," and AMC's "The Walking Dead." The indie writing duo are aiming to be known as the HBO or AMC of Kindle, with a new, character-driven serialized thriller every week.

Their books, between 14,000-24,000 words depending on the title, are called episodes, with six episodes making up each season of their titles. They're currently writing four series, including “Z 2134,” "Yesterday's Gone," "WhiteSpace," "Available Darkness," and "ForNevermore."

3.0 out of 5 stars On it's own, quite a good read but... 24 Dec. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase's a serial. I felt like the book was coming to a climax and looked forward to finding out what the strange cult was about and why Henry's family had been targeted but no. It turns out it's a Kindle Serial what ever that is and will probably go on and on like an American drama series until the ratings die off and there is a final, clumsy and hastily contrived ending.

I did enjoy the book but it's so hard to find a single book these days that has a beginning, a middle and and end all in the same 'cover'. I lose patience when I've been cheated out of an ending and I shan't be continuing this series.

As far as the book itself is concerned though, I liked the scenario of daemons, angels, heaven, hell and purgatory and even though I'm not remotely religious it entertained me and engrossed me but I can't get away from the fact that I may have to read many like it before I am finally enlightened and I can't be doing with that.

Someone, somewhere, please write a book that ends.

2.0 out of 5 stars A bit of a disappointment 13 April 2014
By Ares293
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was lured by the cheap price and the expectance of a story of love, vengeance and violence, but was in for huge disappointment.
I found both the story and the characters a bit sloppy. I finished it because it's not too long a read and I don't like leaving books unfinished.
The idea in itself is not bad - although not the most original, does The Crow (comic and film) ring a bell? - but it's not well-developed enough and, sorry to say, the novel is not well-written either.
My apologies for being so belittling.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, would recommend 11 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
These are my fave authors at the moment, and this book is a good one, I would recommend it unreservedly, but it is not my favourite. My only reservation is that it is more than a little bit miserable, don't read it if you are feeling blue because there isn't much to laugh at. That said the story is good and I will be buying the follow up because I need to know how Henry and his family end up.
For another great book do try their 'Yesterday's gone' books they are excellent, and have a bit of dark humour in them too

I found this book quite entertaining and was quite a 'light' read to fill in the time but it will be good to know when the next book is due for release as this appears to be the first instalment judging from the way it ended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not that Good 24 Mar. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It was slightly disappointing but would have held my interest more if it hadn't dragged on. Reminded me slightly of The Lovely Bones which was much better. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb story 8 Feb. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The latest story from Collective Inkwell is a must read for anyone who has sampled Sean & David's previous works.

This is the tale of Henry Black who returns as a demon to serve justice on the gang that murdered him & his daughter as well as raping his wife.

Written in typical Platt/Wright style the characters are in-depth and the story goes along at just the right pace to keep the reader engaged from page 1 till the very end.

One slight moan (which is nothing to do with the author's or the book itself) is that serialised this book fortnightly whilst us less fortunate UK customers had to wait over two months before we get to lay our hands on it and as much as I enjoyed reading the whole thing in one go each episode had the trademark OMG ending that I feel the UK missed out on.

Anyone who has read anything from the libraries of Sean Platt and David Wright this is a must have read. If you haven't ever read any of their books, its a great one to start with and decide if you like waiting for the next installment like your favorite TV show.
Im a huge fan of their work at Collective Inkwell and was really looking forward to reading this one as its slightly different style to their other series.

Yet again I polished this book off in 2 main sittings and couldn't put it down till I'd turned that last digital page.

What is slightly different about Monstrous is that its the first serial the boys have concentrated on with one point of view. Whereas we have been used to following multi-characters in their other serials. This has been a nice change as they have focused more on Henry and the world around him.
The plot revolves around a comic who has finally become successful after years of hard work; but a devastating family tragedy destroys everything he had. Its a violent first chapter that will keep you hooked. Monstrous is about stone cold revenge and how it can eat you up.
I really love Henry, I was emotionally attached within the first few chapters; his so believable and very relatable as we can all sympathize with how he feels in these traumatic circumstances. What is great about this book its following human nature and I think everyone reading this book will be rooting for poor Henry. Does he help his wife or daughter what a choice to have to make!

I wondered how the boys could make demons and angels work within the book without seeming cliche, but by god they have..what a fantastic read!
I love Ezra and as another reviewer mentioned he really reminded me too of Dobby from Harry Potter. (Can we keep him..

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic read! 4 Sept. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am a huge fan of these guys with everything they write and this was no different. We follow the story of Henry who was killed along with his daughter , and ends up in purgatory to be given a choice to come back and avenge the deaths and the rape of his wife. He did not expect to come back as a demon and we follow his story as he struggles with his own humanity as he tries to get his revenge.
I found it very interesting how we only had the point of view of the main character which is different from Platt and Wrights other books but we were still introduced to other characters who were great.
This book is a sort of combination between my fave show Supernatural with elements of the hulk and and Harry Potter ( Ezra reminded mebof Dobby).
I can not wait til the next series comes out as its just another fantastic book in the growing list of Platt and Wrights excellent stories. Loved it guys! Thank you.

I really liked the story and the read, found it entertaining and enjoyable.

Sadly, this was spoiled for me by the ending, which wasn't an ending at all. Read more
