Amazon.co.uk Review

With eye popping visuals and launching the kind of brightly coloured carnage onto the screen that computer animation excels at, Monsters vs Aliens is a film that knows its intended audience well, and targets them precisely. On one side of the fence is a motley crew of heroes, led by the near 50-feet tall Ginormica. She’s joined by B.O.B. the blob, Dr Cockroach and the frankly bizarre The Missing Link. Between them, they have to fight off the threat of the dastardly Gallaxhar, in a fairly standard at heart good versus evil adventure.

And yet Monsters vs Aliens throws plenty into the pot to make things more interesting. Firstly, it’s odd cast of characters are generally the last thing you’d expect from cute and cuddly kids’ movies, but they’re a hard bunch not to like. Then there’s some terrific voice talent at work, and the overall quality of the animation is simply superb as well.

What’s nice too about Monsters vs Aliens are the tips of the hat to the older viewers. It’s not always the most subtle script for working on two levels, but the assorted nods to science fiction classics are warmly appreciated. They certainly help paper over a few of the cracks when the film’s blinding visuals relax and leave you realising what a straightforward tale is hiding underneath. But then the film tries so hard to keep you entertained that it’s hard not to cut it some slack.

For much of the running time of Monsters vs Aliens though you simply won’t have to. That’s because it’s solid, funny and pacey entertainment, that easily whiles away an hour and a half. There’s plenty of re-watch value here too, in a film that proves to be quality family entertainment. It’s no Shrek, but it’s still a fine piece of work. --Jon Foster

While this is probably not the best DreamWorks film ever (that's probably Shrek 2) it is better than most family films. It's just as good the second time around (although I suspect it would start to wear thin on the third viewing).

However, I have a problem with the way this 2-disc pack is being advertised. I bought something called "Monsters vs Aliens (2-Disc with free 3D glasses) Special Edition", which to me sounded like I was buying a film in 3D. What I actually got was the feature in 2D only, with a second bonus disc with an 11-minute short called B.O.B.'s Big Break, which is in both 2D and 3D.

It doesn't appear that Monsters vs Aliens is being released in a 3D version on DVD. The "extra" disk is light on content (just the short film plus a paddle game in 3D and a not-very-fun karaoke singalong in 2D), and really isn't worth paying extra for. I would recommend that if you want this entertaining family film, you buy the single-disc version (Monsters vs Aliens (1-Disc) [DVD] [2009]) instead.

Having just bought Coraline 3D for my daughter, I thought we'd have another entertaining 3D night in with this movie. Unfortunately, I was fooled by the strap line "With free 3D glasses" into thinking the movie was in 3D. It isn't, it is only an extra that is in 3D. Ok, I should have read the small print, but even so, I think, to the casual buyer, it is a bit misleading. After getting over the initial disappointment, we thoroughly enjoyed the movie itself and if it had been advertised as 2D more prominently, I would have given it four-plus stars. It's funny, you can sit and watch it with your child and you will both enjoy it.

This might not be as layered or polished as some, but it's one of the most laugh out loud animations I've seen in a while. Reese Witherspoon voices Ginormica - the lady who on the day of her wedding is affected by a weird radiation which make her grow 50ft high. She is then taken by a secret government base headed by a general hilariously voiced by Kiefer Sutherland, to join other `freaks' such as the missing link, B.O.B. the blob, and Doctor Cockroach, all similarly plucked from classic movies for those that know their sci-fi. When an alien comes to earth threatening its destruction in his quest to obtain something Earth has, Ginormica and her new friends are all the government has to stand in their way.
So much for the plot, it's pretty straightforward and not particularly full of surprises.. but in fact it's the knowing nods and winks to the genre that make this movie a treat, with plenty of gags both visual and scripted to keep you amused. While the animation is second to the story, and the characters stylised rather than photo realistic, there are moments, such as the Golden Gate Bridge scene, that showcase some excellent animation, particularly in bluray High Def. Hugh Laurie and Seth Rogen add to the excellent voice cast, making this a well rounded worthwhile buy.
As others have mentioned, the only niggling point is the misleading addition of 3D glasses - the cinema version was 3D - this is NOT. There is an additional short (B.O.B.'s big break) which the 3D glasses are for. It's fine, but nothing special... but don't let this put you off a higely entertaining movie.. thumbs up.
