Siamo a sei anni dopo lo schianto di una sonda della NASA in America Centrale, evento che ha costretto a mettere in quarantena e isolare la metà del Messico al confine con gli Stati Uniti. La sonda ha infatti riportato sulla Terra delle spore che, infettando gli alberi, danno vita a strani mostri che, seguendo i fiumi, raggiungono il mare per crescere smisuratamente e riprodursi. La pericolosità per l'uomo sta tutta nel fatto che questi esseri non risultano particolarmente amichevoli, più per spirito di sopravvivenza che per reale aggressività, e le autorità non sono ancora riuscite a venire a capo della faccenda. In questo scenario drammatico si muovono i protagonisti, un cinico reporter incaricato di riportare negli Stati Uniti un'apparentemente sprovveduta turista, in realtà figlia di un importante personaggio. I due affrontano una serie di disavventure e finiscono per innamorarsi.
