I saw this Christmas special when I was about five years old and for reasons I could never work out, it stuck with me throughout my entire life. Whether it was the creatively costumed monsters, the exercising witch or the beautiful, haunting "Silent Night" carol at the end, I have no idea why it's been sitting in the 'nostalgia' section of my brain for most of my life. I went on an Internet hunt to find it, not even knowing the name of it but just that it was about singing monsters. I finally found it, ordered it just after Christmas last year, and waited patiently until this Christmas (2011) to watch it with my family.
It was terrible.
However, it was one of those movies that was so bad that it kind of circled around the spheres of hell and became good again. Originally from Ireland, imagine our shock and surprise that the movie was filmed in New Zealand, where we currently live?! Perhaps it was that which drove us to live 18,000 miles from home.
So, in summary, a fun Christmas monster movie - perhaps a little freaky for the very young - that has the power to make you emigrate halfway around the world 25 years later.
