A common thread in reviews of this release is the fact that it misses a golden opportunity. And this is so true. Monster Magnet are one of the great bands of the last 15 years. If you're interested in buying this CD then you probably have some small inkling of what they're about. I don't think there's any need really to go into that - if you don't know what they're about, then buy 'Powertrip' and 'Spine of God' before you dip your toes any further.

Firstly, why 'Greatest Hits'? Are MM a top 40-oriented band? I don't think so. Maybe 'Best Of', but 'Greatest Hits' is so crass and corporately stupid. Real 'major label' stuff.

The other thing that is utterly absurd about this release is it's claim to contain rare b-sides - yes, all 4 of them. When you consider the mass of material released by MM you wonder how anyone came up with the bright idea of releasing 4 non-album tracks. And then to mix them up with a selection of videos in CD-Rom format. The real problem is that the 2nd disc is neither one thing nor the other. I hate watching CD-Rom videos - the picture is small and poor quality (on my PC at least!). My personal view is that A+M should have either released a 2nd disc stuffed full of b-sides and non-album material (of which there is plenty), or a DVD of their music videos, which would have been a nice companion piece to their 'greatest hits'. It's not rocket science - SPV did it with 'Monolithic Baby!'.

More major label shame.

By the way, if you're a fan and thinking of buying this to get to those b-sides, save yourself the money and go to the Official Monster Magnet Headquarters online - the media section has every significant non-album track and music video available for download, free of charge. Much better than making Herb Alpert that bit richer.

This is a great album, full of amazing songs, yet it only gets four stars. How come? Well, you know the story, if you're a Monster Magnet you'll have all the songs already, but may want to buy it for the videos and B-Sides.
But so many classics are missing! What it comes down to is that a band whose career spans an excellent 10 years+, and who find it impossible to write bad songs can't release a best of that will please everyone. Although you'll still love this album.
So, if you're not aware of who Monster Magnet are and were (where have you been?) this is a great introduction, but honestly you're better off just buying all the albums right now anyway. You won't be disappointed.

Monster Magnet's style is heavily influenced by 1970s space rock band Hawkwind and the doomier side of Sabbath i.e. Master of Reality. Lob in some Marvel Comics and LSD and youre beginning to get into the head of Dave Wyndorf. This compilation covers their best work while on A&M Records in the mid/late 90's & early 00's. Breakthrough-ish single "Negasonic Teenage Warhead" is of course on here, as are "Space Lord", "Powertrip", "Temple of Your Dreams", and Head's Explode, all awesome. Other album track gems include the thought provoking "See You In Hell" which reads like a confession to child murder and dumping the body in a New jersey land fill. Elsewhere, we are invited to ride on a tractor through a drug farm on Tractor (written about his time in rehab) and hand out in a Crop Circle. Groovy spacey doomy stoner metal that delivers on the strong song writing too.

I bought this as i'm a big fan of monster magnet and wanted the DVD that comes with it. Whilst the CD is a good selection of songs the DVD wont work. Not on my computer or DVD player. Wrong area code maybe? Still worth buying for the CD alone.
