This is an entertaining 4-disc collection from Image Entertainment for all fans of 1950s monster movies. Admittedly, these are not the classics of the genre but certainly worthy entries, and the set contains the best transfer of THE GIANT GILA MONSTER (1959) I've ever seen (a big improvement on the version that Image included in their DRIVE-IN DISCS VOLUME 2).
THE LOST CONTINENT (1951 - not the Hammer film) is a bit tedious in the first half but becomes quite engaging when it changes from black-and-white to green (yes, green!), and both THE SHE DEMONS (1957) and MONSTER FROM GREEN HELL (1958) are a lot better than either of them deserves to be. Obviously, no Oscars were expected, but scripts, acting and direction are all competent and workmanlike. Picture and sound quality is better than good, and the set is great value if you can get it for under a tenner. (Mine cost 8 quid, but I see it's gone up a bit since then.)
You might care to check out these other multiple sets from Image which bring together titles from The Wade Williams Collection, most of them in the best transfers you're gonna get of this cheesy Public Domain stuff.
"WEIRD WORLD COLLECTION" - 4 great space exploration movies including the classic DESTINATION MOON;
"WATCH THE SKIES" - 3 films about alien visitors, STRANGER FROM VENUS being the best;
"TEEN TERROR COLLECTION" - not the best set, but it does have a pristine edition of Roger Corman's TEENAGE DOLL;
"MISSION TO MARS COLLECTION" - 2 superb movies: the Special Edition of INVADERS FROM MARS (1953) and FLIGHT TO MARS, but also has the worst movie ever made, ATTACK FROM MARS (really called MIDNIGHT MOVIE MASSACRE - don't watch it, use the disc as a coaster - you'll be glad I told you);
"FEMME FATALE COLLECTION" - 2 crappy movies but 1 bona fide classic: DEVIL GIRL FROM MARS with the magnificent Hazel Court;
and "ALIEN ATTACK COLLECTION" - 4 films, all good, including the wonderful BRAIN FROM PLANET AROUS.
These sets represent a great saving - if you get all 7 sets, you have 24 movies (mostly great, a couple of duds) for around £50. It would cost over £100 to get them separately.
Happy viewing!
