Even for a 12-year old, D.J. Walters has a particularly overactive imagination. He is convinced that his haggard and crabby neighbour Horace Nebbercracker, who terrorizes all the neighbourhood kids, is responsible for Mrs. Nebbercracker's mysterious disappearance. Any toy that touches Nebbercracker's property, promptly disappears, swallowed up by the cavernous house in which Horace lives. D.J. has seen it with his own eyes! But no one believes him, not even his best friend, Chowder. What everyone does not know is D.J. is not imagining things. Everything he's seen is absolutely true and it's about to get much worse than anything D.J could have imagined.

4.0 out of 5 stars Most entertaining film of the year!! 16 Dec 2006
Format:DVD
This was by far the most fun I had at the cinema all year! A great treat for everyone. I didnt know much about the film when it came out. All I knew was Mr Speilberg had a hand in its creation.

So I went along with the knowledge that most of the animated films this year were a bit rubbish. But I have to say this was a very pleasant surprise!

Great story and characters, and some of the most stunning effects of the year, this will sweep you up into its world and not let go until the very end. Complete with in-jokes and sly nods to the old adventure films (most obviously the Goonies), this was pure entertainment from start to finish!

Buy and enjoy!!

I would give this 3D Bluray 5 Stars but for the price and lack of new features. You already know that this film is a 5 star classic.

A standard Bluray is expensive enough but 3D Bluray is very expensive all things considered.

So when you realise that there are NO new special features on this disc except two 3D trailers for Open Season and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs it tends to make the £16.00 hit hurt a little.

You can watch this Bluray in 2D or 3D so you aren't restricted to only watching the 3D version if you don't have enough glasses to go around.

The actual 3D effect in the film is fairly subtle, no pop out in your face moments, it is mainly a depth affair.

However there are one or two eye popping moments where the 3D effect really does shine, the part where D.J. has his nightmare in his bedroom looks fantastic, and the last 10 minute sequence where the protagonist's battle the Monster House looks amazing, especially when the House crosses the road from left to right chasing the children, awesome.

I am baffled that considering how much the movie/electrical goods industry wants 3D to take off that they are releasing 3D films at such a slow pace, and with no new added features to really tempt even hardcore film enthusiasts to make a 2nd purchase I can't see how 3D is going to take off. SONY and Disney etc need to release many more 3D films very soon and with more special feature benefits or their 3D dreams may end up being nightmares.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not the best 3D experience. 24 Nov 2010
By Rich
Format:Blu-ray
Enjoyed this film but A Christmas Carol was much better for a 3d experience as was Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.
If you want to see good 3D here are my preferences
1. Avatar
2. A Christmas Carol
3. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
4. Monster House

That's all I seen so far.........

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty much The enjoyable movie! 24 Nov 2006
Format:DVD
I didn't know what to expect, but I must say I found it quite enjoyable. There was a lot of talk before the movie. People were saying that it will be too scary for the little kids, but not adult enough to capture older kids attention.

I can see it being quite frightening at times for the little ones, but of the kids in the theater its not like I heard any of them screaming mommy. I don't know how well the movie will do with kids, but from an adult's perspective, its definitely worth a viewing.

The best part of the movie definitely has to be the characters. Each were extremely well thought out and put together. They did a fantastic job of matching right voices with the right characters. Characters facial expressions were amazing. You'll find yourself laughing at things they say and do quite a lot.

The animation looks great. They certainly aren't ground breaking. But they fit the movie well. However, I will say that some scenes looked quite amazing.

If you are looking for a fun, clean movie with plenty of laughs and chuckles, this is definitely one you don't want to miss!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good film 27 Oct 2006
By Raff
Format:DVD
What a pleasure it was to watch this. The animation was top class and the voice overs done superbly. Spielberg has really put his touch on this. The story is about a boy who watches a house owned and guarded by a mean old man who everyone hates.

I would recommend this to anyone however for those with very young children beware as I can guarentee it will keep the kids up with renditions of " MUM the house is gonna come and eat me " allnight long. Trust me on this one I KNOW !!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not executed well 27 April 2007
By T. R. Alexander TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
Monster House is a generally good film that suffers from not knowing what it wants to be. It seems to me that Monster House wants to be accessible to both adults and children but does largely fail on both counts. As well as this the plot, although interesting in places, is probably a bit on the light side and this does lead to the film dragging somewhat despite being a relatively short film. On the plus side the animation is truly stunning and there are many good ideas to be found throughout the film. Overall Monster House is a generally fun film, it just doesn't seem to jell that well.

4.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant change 3 Jan 2007
By Mr. David C. Halliday TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
A young boy just heading into puberty spies on his elderly neighbour, who spends his time terrorizing any nippers who venture near his house, and keeps a log of all the old mans activities. The house begins to take on it's own,(unpleasant), personality and soon our young hero, his porky mate and a girl who nearly gets taken by the house team up to do something about it.

As CGI cartoons have become more popular so the storylines have dragged and the humour been stretched wafer thin. Lets be honest we really don't need another pack of wisecracking animals teaching us all 'just to get along' and superb graphics are no big whoop anymore. Which is where 'Monster house' scores so highly, yes it's a cliched old story from any old haunted house movie, but the characters are funny, lifelike and likeable. The script is much sharper than you would expect and the various twists and turns keep the viewer glued.

The animation is of a far better standard than I expected, what it lacks in Pixar style fine detail it more than makes up for in atmosphere. The people aren't that detailed but their expressions are spot on and scenery has a dreamlike, 50's americana style feel to it, no computers,no mobile phones,no modern referances with a knowing nod to the adults.

In the end it all takes a bit of a lurch into daftness but this doesn't detract much and all in all it's a very enjoyable 80 minutes that both children and adults will enjoy throughout.

The extras are fine,( commentary, docs, a picture gallery that is well worth a look etc etc),. The sound is good with some nice rear speaker action and clear dialogue but the picture can be variable, grainy in places and yet clear as a bell in others, either way it's not awful.

A lovely cartoon. The characters are delightful, and it is most enjoyable for children. There is also plenty to make grown-ups chuckle as well.
