Review

A wonderful child's view of adult life, portrayed with gentle humour in charming illustrations. Great for reading before those 'go to work' days. (Parents in Touch )

Product Description

Little monster spends a day at work with his father. First he has to dress and choose which tie to wear. Then he must travel with Dad and all the other commuters. At work he eats the biscuits at the meeting, colours the graphs his father makes on the computer, goes to the canteen for lunch and even stops off for a drink on the way home. Monster thinks his father has it easy at work.

Sarah Dyer's highly entertaining portrayal of a child's-eye view of the adult world of work is full of wit and charm and will be enjoyed by children and adults alike. Written and illustrated with great humour by a wonderful rising picture-book star, creator of the Smarties Award winning Five Little Fiends, as well as Clementine and Mungo, Princess for a Day, and for Frances Lincoln, Mrs Muffly's Monster.

The detail in the illustrations is gorgeous, but the story unfortunately is a little disappointing.

Monster has to go to work with Dad. After dressing, discovering why rush hour is so called and eating all the biscuits at the early morning meeting, Monster beats Dad on the computer before going off to lunch. After colouring in Dad's charts, Monster takes a nap before braving the rush hour in the opposite direction. Much as he enjoyed taking his Dad to work, he decides that he will stay at home with Mum the following day, falling asleep in the linen basket whilst musing on how easy adult life is.

This is a charming view of adult life from a small monster's ego-centric perspective. Illustrations are bold and colourful, with plenty to discuss on every page. It is ideal for reading to small children or for young readers to browse alone.

The day that little monster spends at work with Dad shows that work is really quite easy. Not! 17 Feb 2011
By D. Fowler - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
It was a very, very special day. Little monster was going to go to work with his Dad and he'd be very busy. Naturally, Scamp dog was going to be going along to help. First things first they had to pick out what they were going to wear to work. Dad already selected his tie, but little monster pursed his lips and looked at the four ties in front of him. Guess that Scamp was going to have to do the picking. Soon they were off with Scamp pulling his scooter. For some strange reason Dad was covering his eyes. Rush, rush, rush!

The first thing on the agenda was a plate of yummy biscuits and "a very important morning meeting." Next up was computer work and of course junior got "a much higher score than Dad." It wasn't long before they were filing through the cafeteria line for lunch. Yum! This work stuff seemed to be very easy. Even coloring in "the charts Dad [had] spent in all morning working on" was a snap. Dad's in box was full, but the only thing in the out box was a little tiny mouse. It looked like it was time for a little nap. Gee, was this all there was to this work stuff?

The day that little monster spends at work with Dad shows that work is really quite easy. Not! This funny, quirky little adventure will resonate with anyone who has taken their child to work. Perhaps the only one who had fun was the little guy. It did bring a smile to my face when he actually thinks he is helping and thought it "was all very easy" and couldn't figure out "why Dad complains so much." The collage, set in ITC Stone Sans, is simply delightful and very appealing. If you are complaining a bit too much about your job, perhaps you'll think otherwise after you check out this little guy's "easy" day at work!
