This is the first of a serious of stories about M Pamplemousse.
Pamplemousse is a great comic creation. Having left the Paris Surete in disgrace, he now works as a food inspector for Le Guide, a gastronomic bible whose logo is two snails rampant! However, things are never simple and M Pamplemousse always finds himself involved in some sort of mystery that needs investigation and, inevitably, in a hilarious pickle.
In this case, the mystery is how a head is found in "La Langoustine" restaurants famous delicacy; the pickle involves amorous advances and a mechanical dummy.
Pamplemousse is always accompanied by his faithful hound, Pommes Frites, who is both a help and a hindrance and his wife, known to him as "Cous Cous" makes an appearance at some stage.
If you like the mixture of gastronomy, France, a mystery and bawdy humour, the M Pamplemousse books will hit the mark.

This is the second in the Monsieur Pamplemousse series. A friend lent it to me as he thought it "looked like my kind of book"?? and that was just by the cover!!! Well, when I read it I couldn't wait to get another and managed to get the first (so read them about face) but read the second again as I had enjoyed it soooo much. I now have all the books in this series and have enjoyed every one - so much so that at times I have tears of laughter running down my face. I cant wait for the next one due out later this year.

As a writer in constant search of a half-decent sentence, I want to hug myself when re-reading a Pamplemousse. Partly through delight and partly through envy. Without getting technical, the creator of Paddington Bear structures his sentences, phrases and books in a way which makes them so easily readable. He also captures the Gallic temperament and id perfectly with gentile satire. I should know as I have been writing books about the French for more than thirty years. He simply does everything right, tells an excellent tale and is very funny at the same time. Wish I could say the same about moi.

Up to the usual standard of Michael bond, Monsieur Pamplemousse and Pommes Frites are as quirky and funny and the plot is as intriguing as ever.
