Book Description

In 1923 Charles and Margaret Mackintosh escaped Britain for France. "Charles Rennie Mackintosh in Rousillon" is the only book available on Mackintosh's years in France. With reproductions of 40 of his French paintings alongside photographs of the actual locations today, and images from the period 1923-1927, this is a comprehensive and pictorial account. Written in close collaboration with experts from Glasgow University, the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Glasgow School of Art, and edited by Professor Pamela Robertson, author and leading expert on Mackintosh, "Charles Rennie Mackintosh in Rousillon" includes new research and is written with the French and English translations side-by-side. Published to coincide with and accompany a major exhibition of Mackintosh's work in France - commencing in November at the Dean Gallery in Edinburgh before proceeding to America and France - "Charles Rennie Mackintosh in Roussillon" contains more than 250 images reproduced in full colour throughout.

This is just such a fabulous book. It is about the later years of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife, Margaret Macdonald, and their time spent in the Midi-Pyrennees in the 1920's. It is an excellent travel guide as well as a detailed description of the artists time spent there. The author has obviously done lots of research and presents the book chronologically, each page having beautiful photographs of Mackintosh's watercolours alongside a photograph or description of the setting either from the 1920's or present day. I highly recommend this book to anyone visiting the area or interested in this talented couple and their work.
