Format: Paperback
If readers are influenced by the reviews a book gets then I can see how the previous reviewer will have affected sales of this valuable book. As a serious historian specialising in this particular conflict I would recommend this book to any student but more especially to any person coming only recently discovering an interest in these matters fore the following reasons: Mons is frequently characterised as an heroic failure for the British, indeed Nigel Farndale in his novel "The Blasphemer" says as much from the sources he had used but Farr puts the record straight here. The German Army was thrashing about in the dark unaware of the true British presence until it was too late and Farr shows that it threw the enemy off track forcing errors that would bring about the failure of the Germans to exploit properly the brilliance of The Schlieffen Plan. The relevant facts are well presented and the sources used are respectable and sound.

Farr then goes on to give what is a standardized abridged report on the conduct of the bit in the middle and again, from an introductory point of view these are very good essays.

Lastly he covers the liberation of Mons. Farr's interest in this stems from his affection for General Henry Horne and the reasons are pretty clear why. Horne started his war at Mons as a Brigadier gunner and ended the war there as the only gunner general in command of an army. Horne was enormously proud of the privilege that liberating Mons was. The town had a psychophysical importance way in excess of the first battles overall importance. It was where the Germans had expected to sweep aside the British but instead they were stopped in their tracks. Farr covers the details well and I feel better informed having never looked specofically at this aspect of the war.

An interesting read but still leaves gaps 15 Oct 2013
By The Truth - Published on
Format: Paperback
Yes an interesting read but it still leaves gaps in the events of the day. I personally have met daughters & sons of soldiers who can account for their fathers telling them of the massive 'Angels of Mons' appearances.
