I've earlier read Axelrod's "Everything I know about business I learned from playing Monopoly", which illustrated how Monopoly could be used as a model for understanding business. However, Monopoly game is an even better model for understanding personal finance, as Orbanes illustrates here. Although there is a total of 36 "secrets" to be learned from the Monopoly game, the basic ideas are illustrated on the book cover. Firstly, Monopoly teaches us about cash management. In Monopoly and in real life, it is necessary to keep a cash flow balance in terms of investing as much as possible but not so much that we cannot handle a rainy day. Secondly, Monopoly teaches us about diversification. It is not sufficient to collect only one colour series. Railways are important cash-cows needed for financing the investments, and it is also useful to have invested in streets that prevent others from building. Finally, Monopoly teaches us about negotiations. Orbanes uses game theory to illustrate this. Excellent. This is a wonderful book.

LOVED IT! 27 Mar. 2013
By Freedom Lover - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book makes so much sense. How many of us get proper training in financial competency? Yet we face the daunting task of somehow building a comfortable nest egg by the time we retire. Every mistake delays achieving that goal. So how can we hope to avoid them?

Learning to play Monopoly well, no surprise, provides the equivalent of a financial degree. And Monopoly Money, and You reveals all its lessons. As the author notes, instead of wondering how to make a financial decision, your game experience provides an edge to sharpen your financial (and negotiating) skills. And he makes it fun to learn these skills on every page.

Relateable financial advice 2 April 2013
By Nicole - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
The benefit of learning to play a game well, is winning more often. But it's even better if winning a game can also help you "win" in real life. That's the big idea behind Monopoly Money, and You: what works in the game applies to real life (often in "fact" but always in principle). After only a few pages, this idea comes into focus. As the author mentions, theory and practice are the same until practice. Playing Monopoly well turns financial theory into common sense. And the "practice" should help you respect your money and invest it wisely. I also like his idea of creating your own "game plan," setting your lifetime financial goal, and writing down the rules you choose to get there.

Get Ready to Succeed!! 29 Mar. 2013
By Jaycee - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Well, I think I'm pretty good with numbers and I loved his analysis of things like odds, return on investment, expecting the "expected," and investment timing. But i have to admit , I've been uncomfortable going toe-to-toe in negotiating. But then I read this book and I see what I've been missing. The author stresses the need to be yourself when negotiating, how to read others (its not difficult) , and being assertive (not aggressive) to gain what you need to make a deal work. The tips he provides, and especially the type of "opponents" you are likely to encounter, are not just illuminating, they are all too true and even humorous. Great read, very practical.

Great Book! 1 April 2013
By vinkid - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book shows how every financial decision you make while playing Monopoly connects to making money in the real world. Like, how to make decisions to get a better return for your hard earned dollars; the odds of something good, or bad, happening; getting an edge in a transaction (this book includes really practical advice on how to comfortably become a better negotiator). And it helps you to set your lifetime financial goal, and pick the best rules to get there. I never realized playing Monopoly can earn you an "MBA".

Right on the "Money"! 27 Mar. 2013
By Red White & Blue - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I've always loved playing Monopoly, and now I know all the "secrets of success" to win it more often. Perhaps more importantly, I get the author's grand idea. What works in the game, applies to real life. I've now written my 10 financial rules and set my goal for "winning." I understand why, in the game, diversification is essential, not to mention staying out of debt and maintaining an emergency fund. And I see how to make them work for me, and grow my real money (I hate losing it, don't you?).
