My All Time Favorite Kansas CD!, 31 Oct 2003
This review is from: Monolith [Us Import] (Audio CD)
I have to admit, I've only just discovered America's greatest (and most underrated) progressive rock band, in the last few years, and the music is so great that I've bought all the back catalogue. Anyone who knows their music will probably site the majestic "Leftoverture", or the tremendous "Point Of Know Return", as being their best efforts. I disagree, and say in my humble opinion that "Monolith", is their best, and most cohesive album of all.
Opening with the powerful and emotional "The Other Side", and finishing with the beautiful ballad "Reason To Be", this is a band at the height of their powers. The music is heavier than previous albums, but there are many types of music displayed here, including the R'n'B influenced "People Of The South Wind" (The literal meaning of the word "Kansas",in the tongue of the Kansa tribe of Native Americans).
My own personal favourite is "Angels are Falling", written by the brilliant Steve Walsh, who sings as well as he ever did, all over this album. The close of this track is as exciting and emotional a rock performance,as I have ever heard, especially vocally. It literally sends shivers down the spine!
This album didn't do as well as previous Kansas efforts, at the time, but I rate it above all of them due to brilliant songs, and even better musicianship. If you like progressive music with a uniquely American flavour, then this is for you. If you are already a fan of Kansas, and don't have a copy of this, then I advise you to get one IMMEDIATELY!
I do wish that the whole back catalogue had been re-mastered instead of just the 3 best known albums, but it still doesn't disappoint, sound wise. THIS IS ESSENTIAL KANSAS!!

This is a fantastic album, 23 Nov 2011
One of the things that critics say about Kansas is that they have so many influences (british progressive rock, etc). Anyway this a real solid album produced by Kansas themselves and with many great musical ideas . If only for the magnificent Angels have fallen is worthy (with that amazing guitar riff in the middle section ) but the other 7 songs are no less entertainig and interesting . Clearly for me this is a very underrated Kansas's album but it's a very fine album . How my soul cries out for you is a rocking song , amazing. Reason to be, wonderful ballad. Wish that any album with 8 songs was this good.

I bought this DVD for my husband for Valentine's Day. Although it took longer to come than I expected, my husband was thrilled when he got it.
