After watching the Smell Of Reeves & Mortimer you will probably get into this series a little easier than if its the first R&M product you have ever seen. Its off topic, wild at moments and definately bizarre (but isn't that Reeves & Mortimer all over?) Some parts are funny, others are clearly not, and some edits seem a bit loose in an attempt to make the footage fit the alloted episode time. Its not R&M's best series and even for a seasoned fan it lacks the spontinaity that made "The Smell Of" so great. At the value price Amazon sells this series at it is still worth watching for the few classic bits.

As a television show, 'Monkey Trousers' offered some entertaining light relief. As a DVD, the cracks begin to show. Conceived by Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer, we are delivered a string of off-the-wall comedy sketches. There is an excellent cast - Reeves & Mortimer, Griff Rhys Jones, Neil Morrissey, Alistair McGowan, Patsy Palmer, Tim Healy, Steve Coogan, Mark Benton, Liz Smith. Angus Deayton, Glynis Barber, Lisa Stansfield - amongst others - make cameo appearances. And John Thomson, Rebecca Front, and Ronni Ancona are stand-out.
Unfortuantely, the sketches and running gags get a bit boring when you're in a position to watch them one after the other. Vic Reeves plays "The Croc Botherer" - it's a lovely satire of a certain Aussie wildlife programme ... until, week by week, he virtually replays the same gag over and over and over. Matters are made worse by the DVD - you can elect to watch the sketches grouped together. 'Alastair', the estate agent, is funny first time ... and then becomes tedious: an estate agent who is able to tell prospective customers that a house has walls and floors, but who can't answer questions about asking price, subsidence, fixtures and fittings, etc., is a neat bit of social satire ... but it's a gag which runs thin the second time around.
It's as if Reeves and Mortimer set out to try to create catch phrases then write sketches round them. The trouble is that the catch phrases aren't that catchy. The sketches are often genuinely funny - until they are overdone and repeated into bland comic anonymity. John Thomson's take on personal injuries claims is funny - and there was mileage in paralleling it with 'ninjury' and 'ginjury' claims, but it just runs out of speed and becomes daft rather than ridiculous.

I am shocked into shame to discover all the bad reviews this dvd has received! Its brilliant! If you have the same warped sense of humour as Vic and Bob then you will love it. Not every single sketch is funny, but Vic and Bob's are. Please don't let the poor reviews on here put you off, because as long as you are in posession of a sense of humour then you will enjoy it.

My favourite Reeves and Mortimer product. So funny and clever. A real comedy gem that everyone should watch - they should repeat this to give new generations a b.good laugh.
