Product Description

Book Description

A fascinating, funny and all-too-human collection of celebrity monkeys and apes. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Product Description

We share about 98 percent of our DNA with chimpanzees, our closest biological cousins, and never have the similarities been so amusingly - or brilliantly - captured. The intimate portraits in this quirky calendar, shot by renowned photographer Jill Greenberg and drawn from her bestselling book Monkey Portraits, convey a startlingly human range of emotions and personalities.

Monkey Portraits 4 Oct 2007
By Spider Monkey HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
This is a great book full of...monkey portraits. Most of the monkeys have been used in various films and commercials and their credits are noted in the back of the book. The style of photography is pretty unique, almost as if it is rendered in paint or another media and it is wonderful to see the expressive faces of these beautiful creatures. There are some wonderful natural poses, where the artist has captured the personality of the monkey, and others (where the monkey has been trained to) where the subject is posing for the picture. Although these are less satisfying than the natural poses, they are still full of charm. Animal rights campaigners will worry about using animals is studios like this for art, rather than taking shots in the wild. I tend to agree natural, wild shots are more satisfying to view, but that doesn't take away from some wonderful photography and animal portraiture in this book. Worth a look if you're interested in primates and have many other books on the topic.

Superb 12 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
Phenomenal glossy and emotional portraits of our cousins. The heavy retouching (which is part of Greenberg's signature) does sometimes get in the way.

Beautiful portraits presented in a contemporary, high quality publication, demonstrating Greenbergs trademark lighting setups, and retouching that only enhances the emotional content of the images. The animal rights crowd would hate this book but should love it! It is assumed that these monkeys are somehow mis-treated, and forced to 'perform' for the camera. However, they are probably the luckiest monkeys on Earth! They are provided and cared for like no other animals in the wild. They are not forced to do anything. Try forcing an Orangutang to do something and you may end up dead! You must show the greatest respect when dealing with such animals as they have no concept of it themselves. They are trained/coaxed to do certain things and as a result of this interaction with us, may have far more interesting and fulfilling lives than those in the wild. Yes, they have pretty good lives. The images themselves could hardly be described as comical. They are reflections of ourselves. Split second moments that just happen to mimic our own expressions. Hardly suprising though is it.
