DVD Description

Enter the colourful, surprising and mischievous world of Mongrels... A world of rutting, Mating rituals, territorial defence, survival of the fittest with all the characters played by Puppets!

They may be furry, they may be feathered, they may be feral (some of them at least), but scratch their hairy surfaces and these guys are just five mixed-up kidults struggling with everyday emotional truths about life, love, sex, aspirations, desperations and shattered dreams.

Puppeteers Talk to the Hand are Bafta-winners who have worked with Jim Henson, Gorillaz and the Scissor Sisters Featuring the voices of Rufus Jones (Katy Brand’s Big Ass Show), Lucy Montgomery (The IT Crowd) Dan Tetsell (The Omid Djalili Show, Lab Rats), Katy Brand (As, Kingdom, Pulling) Created, developed, and directed by Adam Miller (Katy Brand’s Big Ass Show, Taking the Flak) Producer - Stephen McCrum (Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps)

Let's meet the cast:

Nelson, Your typical everyday, spice-rack-owning, lactose-intolerant, broadsheet-reading, metrosexual, urban fox. New to London, this small town boy is planning to make the absolute best of his new territory in the Big City. Destiny, a sexy, pretentious 'It Bitch' wannabe Afghan hound, Marion, a wide-eyed, slow-brained street cat with no balls! Kali, the sarcastic pigeon & Vince, a wild, unashamed fox who's everything Nelson isn't.

Cult furball classic 17 July 2010
By Julie Cutler TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
One of those cult shows that nobody normally hears about (because the BBC hides it away at weird times- thank you rebellious staff promoting BBC iPlayer). A set of dysfunctional animals living in a pub garden in the shadow of Canary Wharf go about their lives. Featuring extremely well made furry puppets and live action from obliging TV hasbeens (the sort that don't get to appear on celebrity in the jungle/big brother shows- that far gone!)pigeons and foxes, cats and up market Essex pooches live through the angst of the modern world. The closest I can get to is the Aardman classic, Rex the Runt (currently unavailable in DVD). The under"dog" here is Nelson the Fox- completely hopeless- desperate to appear on Springwatch (except it's actually run by animal actors),desperate to get into a petting zoo ("3 days since last E.coli outbreak"), undergoing torment with his French Pen Pal fox (foam, foam). It's vicious, foul mouthed and, once you get over the shock, very very funny (especially the badger with the pitchfork fighting a rabbi).

I oh so wish there will be a second series, but given the fact that this one took 5 years to make according to the beebs' site, I shake with potential disappointment. I'd love a Nelson doll though. My other half's favourite character is foulmouthed Vince the fox, voiced by the same actor who played the annoying fake celebrity interviewer "Dennis Pennis" (!!!??!!!)

Apparently it shares most of the production staff with a cult Channel 4 show "Pets" (track it down via YouTube)- I prefer Mongrels. Be there or be rhomboid!

I discovered Mongrels completely by accident and am I ever glad I did! Never before has a cast of puppets made me laugh so hard. Metrosexual Fox Nelson, It-Bitch Destiny, obscurely accented stray cat Marion, vengeful pigeon Kali and foul mouthed fox Vince star in this adult, cross species, puppet comedy about life in the backyard of an East London pub (and beyond).

The jokes border on the controversial, there is a smattering of swearing and sex and plenty will find offence in certain jokes. BUT it is done with such charm and the characters are brought to life with so much care and attention that really none of it matters. There are cameos from some surprisingly up-for-it BBC "celebrities" including Eamon Holmes, Clive Anderson, Scott Mills etc, as well as a song sung by one of the furry cast members in each episode, see especially "Everybody loves a lesbian", "Breaking up is such a faff" and "Middle-Class is magical."

But ultimately this is a comedy which sets out to make you laugh, not to offend. There is a real intelligence to the humour, unlike most of the dross usually found on this show's home channel. Mongrels is something worthy of your attention and you'll find someone to relate to, whether it be the awfully middle-class Nelson, the murderous Kali or the highly strung Destiny. These are episodes that you can watch time and time again and will have you laughing (and singing) for days after.

Buy it, now!

****ing Funny! 11 Aug 2010
Format:DVD
Wow! What can I say... havent enjoyed a show since... i cant remember! Some of the reviews have been sniffy - one (The Independent) described it as a show for adults but NOT grown-ups. Oooo! Personally, I'm very happy to be a non-grown up adult if it means I can enjoy 'Mongrels'. I think this show is set to be an absolute builder. Viewing figures have not been great, but those who've stuck with it have been rewarded with some of the best laugh-out loud laughs in years. Every episode has been great fun and the humour has been wonderfully sick, crude n offensive in equal measures; from Kali's cruelty (perfectly voiced by Katy Brand) to Vince's expletives (which are better because they ARE bleeped). Of course, the real heart of the show is the interplay (!?!) between Marion and Nelson... a Laurel and Hardy for our age? Please purchase and enjoy... never before has being an imbecile been such fun.
