2 of 2 people found the following review helpful By Douglas MacRae on 2 Oct 2002
Format: Paperback
In this one of many brilliant books by Ellul, he exposes the folly of a purely collective, societal approach, such as that offered by communism, or capitalism. Instead, through a study of various Biblical references in the Old and New Testament, puts the responsibilty on the individual. The new covenant of Jesus is compared to the Old Testament pattern of wealth as a sign of blessing. He examines the teaching of Jesus on God and Mammon. Contemporary models of stewardship are exposed as inadequate. Further, he clearly shows the underlying power money has over a person, despite any feelings of control we may think we have. The teachings of Jesus about giving and trusting provide the path to freedom - every hair is numbered. Only by God's grace, transforming power, and love are we able to overcome this subtle and insidious power. Ellul effectively shows (and reportedly demonstrated) that through giving is the power of money overcome. Highly recommended, especially at a time in our history when many have lost faith in the market.

Money and Power 21 Oct 2009
By David Grant - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This is one of the best books you will read on the power of money in our lives and how we can break it. As children, we played a game:"Mother May I?" and if "Mother" didn't give permission, we couldn't do what we wanted to do. All we have done now is change the word to "Dollar" may I? It is quite interesting to be aware of how often "money" makes our decisions. Rather than: Do I need it? Is it valuable? Is it wise?
The book is hard to find, but I would encourage anyone who can find a copy--to read it! And break the power of money!

A prophetic voice of the 20th century 7 Jan 2013
By Kenneth V. Finney - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I had a copy before and gave it away. Needed another copy to consider once again this prophetic message to Christians everywhere but especially to Mammon saturated America. The chapter on how to teach children about money is well worth the price.
