Biography

Biography by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Dire Straits emerged during the post-punk era of the late '70s, and while their sound was minimalistic and stripped down, they owed little to punk. If anything, the band was a direct outgrowth of the roots revivalism of pub rock, but where pub rock celebrated good times, Dire Straits were melancholy. Led by guitarist/vocalist Mark Knopfler, the ... Read more in Amazon's Dire Straits Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Money for Nothing - No Way 7 Oct 2002
By stuart
Format:Audio CD
The title, taken for the song of the same name hardly does this album justice, this is money very well spent. Not only does it contain, in my opinion, some of the very best songs from a fantastic period of the band, but some writing that i can only qualify as that of a genious! It has the perfect balence between lyrics and instrumental sections, and is the only album to contain "Twisting by the Pool". To be honest there is not a single title on this album that i do not like considerably, from the very moving "Brothers in Arms" and "Romeo and Julliet" (my favourate), to the uplifting "Sultans of Swing". On reading this you may think im a Dire Straits fanatic, well, im not; im more of a Queen fan to be truthful, which is why i was so taken aback by this album. To sumerise, this is a must have in any collection, if not, your really are missing out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Money for Great Rock! 27 Jan 2005
Format:Audio CD
Whether or not you can be classed as a Dire Straits fan I would seriously doubt if there isn't a place for this superb recording in anyone's CD collection.

12 absolutely brilliant tracks covering the band's best output from 1978 to 1984 and whilst there isn't a weak track amongst them there are some outstanding songs on this collection. You have two eight minute plus rock sagas in "Tunnel of Love" and a superb live version of "Telegraph Road", high tempo rock and roll in "Twisting by the Pool", moody atmospheric songs like "Where do you think you're going" and "Private Investigations" and for those who like their more popular wide-appeal offerings there "Walk of Life" and "Money for Nothing"

My personal favourites are the bitter-sweet romantic "Romeo and Juliet" and the tragic "Brothers in Arms"

As I say this album really does show the band off in their pomp and I would recommend it for any fan of good honest rock music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 24 April 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is the definitive DS collection. It is actually better than the'Sultans Of Swing' compilation even though there is none of their latermaterial on it.
'Sultans Of Swing', 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'Tunnel of Love' in theiroriginal forms and not edited and the live remix of 'Telegraph Road' is asuperb offering from the otherwise over-rated ALCHEMY set. The only thingis that 'Money for Nothing' and 'Brothers In Arms' have been edited onthis. For this reason you'll want the 'Brothers In Arms' CD as well. Otherwise a perfect intro to Dire Straits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer bliss 22 April 2003
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
As long as you can handle the only slightly dated feel of The Walk of life and Twisting by the pool, this album is fantastic. Knopfler (lead guitar) is really in his element here, and his sensibility shines through. One of the best soft rock albums available and almost certainly the best DS album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Money For Nothing 1 July 2009
By Spider Monkey HALL OF FAME TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
Of the Dire straits best of's on the market `Money for Nothing' is my favourite, simply because it is the first one I bought and I prefer the track running order to later collections. This has a selection of tracks up until `Brothers in Arms' album and although later best of's include tracks from `On Every Street' and `On The Night' this in no way detracts from the tracks on offer here. From `Sultans of Swing' to the fun feel of `Twisting by The Pool' and including the romantic standard `Romeo and Juliet' this album covers them all. My particular favourite is `Telegraph Road' which leads you to the anthem `Money for Nothing' and the brooding `Brothers in Arms' which ends this wonderful selection. For an example of Knopflers song writing and unique guitar tone in one place this album is a great place to start and once you've taken a listen I'll guarantee you'll want to go and find more. A solid `best of' collection that is still worth considering despite later greatest hits packages.

Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.

5.0 out of 5 stars No better place than to start here 13 Mar 2007
By Jay
Format:Audio CD
f you are looking to buy a Dire Straits album, no better place than to start here. This contains all the best songs from their debut up to 'Brothers In Arms'. The songs are predominantly in original studio form and not edited in the case of 'Sultans of Swing', 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'Tunnel of Love'. And the one superb cut from the otherwise overrated live album ALCHEMY is included here in the form of 'Telegraph Road'.

5.0 out of 5 stars So Good i bought it three times! 1 July 2010
Format:Audio CD
Dire Straits Money for Nothing is one of the greatest albums i've ever heard.
From start to finish i never tire of listening to Mark Knopflers unique guitar sounds, from the melodic Romeo & Juliet, to the electric rock of Money for Nothing.
I have previously bought it twice on cassette. I liked it so much, i wore them out!!
Finally, thanks to Amazon, i've managed to upgrade to a rare original 1988 copy on cd in near new condition for a tenner!
New sealed copies can cost well over a hundred US dollars!
I got a bargain. Hope you do too.
