Product Description

Multi-millionaire Malcolm Pembroke's colourful life has included five wives and nine children. When his fifth wife is murdered, he patches up a quarrel that has been simmering for nearly three years with his favourite son Ian, and asks for help. Ian Pembroke, who detested the fifth wife Moria, agrees to meet his father at Newmarket yearling sales. From here he is instantly whirled into a horrifying race against time to find Moira's murderer before the maniac can strike again. Greed, malice and lethal ploys lie ahead on the rocketing journeyings of father and son as they track the killer remorselessly. Yet they are still able to grab some enjoyment along with the peril as they find time to watch many of the world's top races.

Book Description

Malcolm Pembroke never expected to make a million pounds without making enemies. Nor did he expect his latest wife to be brutally murdered. All the clues suggest the killer comes from close to home - but after five marriages and nine children, that still leaves the field wide open. When he finds his own life in danger, Pembroke entrusts his safety to his estranged son, Ian, an amateur jockey; and through him discovers a compulsive new outlet for his financial expertise. Soon he's playing the international bloodstock market for incredible stakes. Not the safest bet for a man on the run from avaricious relatives. Particularly when one of them's got a bomb...

This book was published 23 years ago - and it shows. Pace slow; uneventful denouement; one shock. If I had been reading (rather than listening to) the book, I would definitely have put it aside, but Tony Britton could read the telephone directory and I would listen. But don't expect excitement. Characterization of main character and narrator nice, but far too many characters. Lazy novel.

a great romp 30 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback
An adventure about a family and their failings. Typical Francis a good read. Malcolm Pembroke is a rich man with a large family and some ex wives. He is under threat so he needs to find one of his children he can trust. The family is unloveable and dysfunctional - money clearly does not buy happiness. Despite their difficulties you come to care about their fates as you consider one or other as a potential murderer. There is always a hores or two but this in not about the seamy side of racing and perhpas the horses are the most loveable characters. I love this book and bought this to replace a much revisited copy that has finally disintegrated!

This is my favourite Dick Francis novel of all; I have read it so many times my copy is falling apart. Fighting family members, with all their motivations very well explored and believable - and, of course, horses.
