Product Description

When Mondo Enduro was conceived in the winter of 1992 it seemed like a substantial challenge to those involved. It was only in the few months before departure (spring 1995) that the possibly greater challenge of filming it was seriously considered. None of the seven riders had any experience of shooting or directing and of course, none of them were used to being in front of the camera. And indeed, what camera? After various call it became clear that as 'members of the public' the notional adventures of Mondo Enduro held zero interest to the TV establishment. Around the same time, Austin and Gerald's mum and dad had bought a fancy but chunky video camera; the Sony VX-1, the first ever Hi8 camera. The Vince parents' had found the VX-1 a touch 'new fangled' and gladly sold it on to the Mondo team. In many respects it is this single fact that made the Mondo Enduro show possible. This was the first time that amateurs were able to record their adventures to a high quality but on a low budget and hence, this DVD is in some small way at the vanguard of reality TV. The pivotal VX-1 camera was augmented with a truly miniature super 8 camera and a 1970s microphone from a car boot sale. Thusly equipped the team shot 21 hours of video and 52 minutes of cine film over the next 400 days. How it ever got onto the Discovery Channel thereafter, is indeed, another story...

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the way it should be done, 15 May 2007
This is a brilliant piece of travel film, WITHOUT the tantrums, sponsorship, enough spare parts to rebuild the bikes, 3 back up vehicles and half the health service incase you fall of and break a fingernail.

If you want to see what it is realy like to travel warts and all buy this, along with Terra CIRCA the sequal which I think is even better.
As the book says you dont need Mcgregor style sponsorship to go and have a real adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars ROUND THE WORLD ON A WORN INNER TUBE & GAFFER TAPE!, 4 May 2008
By JOHN DENNIS "scratch mold" (CHESTERFIELD UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
You've seen Ewan & Charlie's two wheeled adventures on brand new bikes, thousands of pounds of sponsorship and Hollywood film production values. Well if you want to experience the real thing Austin and the boys show you how. No sponsorship, no money, no hotels just the spirit of adventure and willingness to succeed. Watch the Mondo Enduro team battle against all the odds and complete an amazing journey. Filmed with only basic 8mm film and video cam it doesn't get much more basic than this. If you have ever wanted to take your motorbike out on the open road and have the adventure of a lifetime Austin and the boys prove that it doesn't take loads of dosh just the guts to go out and do it. Marvel as the Enduros battle the swamps of the impossible Zilov Gap, repair numerous punctures and mechanical failures. Party with Vodka swilling Russians and survive road traffic accidents. There's humour, drama and excitement and loads of dust and dirt. It makes for compulsive viewing and must rank as one of the greatest motorcycle adventures of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars SUPERB ADVENTURE!, 12 Nov 2008
Mondo Enduro is proof that you don't need money a famous face or sponsorship to accomplish an epic adventure. All that is needed is a bit of grit, determination and a few loose marbles. Following the Mondo Enduro teams example, anyone can under take their own epic adventure.

The Mondo Enduro team was made up of normal members of the public, who decided, as you do, to travel round the world via the longest route possible in the shortest amount of time. Their route took them from London, through Central Asia, Kazakhstan and Siberia; then from Alaska to Chile and finally from Cape Town through Africa and the Middle East back to London. During this epic journey and unlike Ewan & Charley the ME team had no back up, no support, no internet and no mobile phones. This lack of technology and support makes what they achieved all the more amazing. The ME team had few luxuries, if any and often camped rough, fixing their battered bikes by themselves and more often than not relying solely on their ingenuity.

Mondo Enduro is a truly fantastic adventure and a must own, demonstrating to everyone who watches it that anything is possible. ME might not have the flair and style of Long Way Round, however it makes up for it with charm, plenty of drama and unintentional comedy moments. On their journey round the world Austin Vince and the rest of the lads demonstrate true grit and determination in the face of almost insurmountable odds.
