4.0 out of 5 stars excellent little tale of murder, 13 Aug 2009
By Matthew H "Matthew H" (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
When my mother first saw the title for this book and then I told her it was a book for children her immediate reaction was, "that sounds horrible, children reading books about murder." I corrected her of course, telling her that kids love murder and mysteries and all things grizzly. My only hope upon opening this book is that it wouldn't dissapoint on these counts.
On the whole it does a good job. There is plenty of murder; five people are knocked off in 107 pages. And there is plenty of mystery; although with so few people left at the end it soon becomes kind of obvious what is going to happen. Maybe I do not give ten year olds enough credit (for this is at whom the book is aimed) but I don't think they will be able to work out the murderer quite so easily.
All in all a well written book, tense throughout, with some good humour. Highly recommended.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
The storyline of `Mondays are Murder' is cleverly constructed as an `Agatha Christie' type of crime thriller in which anyone could have `dunnit'. Though the plot is complex the narration is kept simple and it is easily read as exciting events unfold. Main characters are children and it is a children's book - not necessarily the same thing! `Mondays are Murder' is a short book with only 100 pages of large print, and unfortunately this leaves insufficient space for detailed definition and development of persona. Target audience is probably correctly recorded as "aged 10+" and it is acknowledged there is the desire to generate an "addictive" readership. Publicity material suggests that author Tanya Landman is setting the scene for a series of crimes to be investigated and solved by her young `Miss Marple', and it is likely that in an ongoing process readers will gain understanding and form attachments. If future plots are as compelling as, and subsequent conclusions are made with similar aplomb as `Mondays are Murder', then Tanya Landman deserves to succeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars More of these please!, 15 Aug 2009
This book hit just the right note with my 10 year-old who is desperate
for something with a bit of substance - but still doesn't have the
tenacity to cope with a full length murder mystery like Agatha Christie.
He's mad about murder mysteries on TV so this was exactly what we needed.
