Tie-in to major new documentary series about the Queen

Product Description

Every year over 5000 royal engagements take place around the world, from the Queen's famous summer garden parties to the mysterious world of the Privy Council and high-profile overseas tours. But little is widely known about the inner workings of the institution that lies at the very heart of the British nation. For the first time ever, The Monarchy takes the reader behind the scenes, meeting the people that keep the royal machine running like clockwork.

With unprecedented access to the key players and organizations involved, The Monarchy follows the working life of the Queen over the course of a whole year, both home and abroad. Ever wondered who opens the Queen's mail, who pays the bills, or even how the royals follow the score in the Ashes? Alongside such trivial matters sit weightier concerns, such as audiences with the Prime Minister, the formal honouring of bravery and excellence, and the sensitive issue of the royal response at times of controversy or crisis.

Accompanying a major BBC1 television series, The Monarchy provides a fascinating insight into the public and private lives of this most familiar of families. Written by the Daily Mail's, Robert Hardman, and lavishly illustrated with exclusive colour photographs, this book will appeal both to avid royal-watchers and anyone fascinated in the history and heritage of the United Kingdom.

Robert Hardman spent the best part of a year observing mainly the Queen, but other Royals as well, in an attempt to answer that age old question: `what exactly do they do?' And the answer to that question is quite a lot as it happens and much of it unseen by the general public.

The book is divided into a small number of chapters which focus on the main areas of the modern working life of the Monarch and her family. There are numerous single and double paged colour photographs which really bring the text to life and allow the reader to pause and absorb the gravity or significance of a particular scene. The text includes fascinating facts and statistics about all aspects of our modern Monarchy which are often quite surprising and refreshingly illuminating.

Love them or loathe them, there is no doubt at all that the Queen and Prince Phillip have worked tirelessly for the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth for many decades. The sheer number of public engagements that the Queen attends each year is truly enormous and would certainly overwhelm me! This is a book which really gets to the heart of the working life of our Monarchy.

I strongly challenge any individual who claims that our Queen "does nothing" to read this book and still retain that opinion. Whether we have a hereditary Monarchy or an elected President, we as British taxpayers would still have to foot the bill for their public duties as Head of State. I am quite happy to continue to pledge my support for a Queen who is an inspiration and true role model for her many years of devoted and unstinting public service.

A book recommended to all Royal enthusiasts.

For anyone who is interested in the workings of the British Royal Family this book is completely fascinating.
It is also essential reading for anyone interested in British culture also, as the Monarchy is an integral part of Britain. Many people knock the Royal family, and as in most things it is easier to be critical and mock the Monarchy and the value of it than to praise it. However when the Queen visits anywhere either in the UK or elsewhere, people flock to see her because she is admired. The Queen is not popular just because she is the Queen, she is popular because she is hardworking, she is dedicated to the nation, and dedicated it's people. Because of this the Queen is loved and respected.
This book shows you her world and how it operates! Amazing, buy it!!

Should definitely be read in conjunction with the tv series as the book expands beautifully on the series by providing many more anecdotes and glimpses of the work being done behind-the-scenes.

There is however, a rather unfortunate typo which results in Prince Charles talking about "pubic duties", so I hope a proofreader has another look before any future reprints.
