Book Description

July 2011
With Sandra Boynton's spirited chickens, cows, hippos, pigs, and mice running, skipping, and hopping through the pages plus its renowned organizational brawn, Mum's calendar is seriously hardworking and seriously fun, too. To make it practical, the calendar covers sixteen months beginning in September. And the format is pure genius: The oversized grid is laid out on a vertical, with five columns across the top (one for each family member) and the days of the month reading down the left side. It's easy to see who's doing what, and when they're doing it, with just a glance. Includes 500 stickers and a handy write-on, wipe-off magnetic phone list for the fridge.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great way to organise your family life 15 July 2010
Format:Calendar|Verified Purchase
I have been buying these calendars for four or five years now. I have looked at many similar ones, but none has the same space as this one for writing in. There are five columns, the first of which is headed "Mum" and the rest of which are blank, allowing for four other family members. I only have three other family members and use the final column for general info. such as birthdays, vet appointments etc.

Each box is approx. 1.5cm high by 4cm wide, allowing you to fit in more than one appointment per day, which for me is the problem with all the other calendars of this type, which only give you a narrow single line for your appoinment. When hung, the overall length of the calendar (not including the drop-down storage pocket) is about 60cm.

I have just received my 2010/2011 calendar, having pre-ordered it in May, and the fact that it runs from August 2010 to December 2011 has allowed me to fill in my next dental check-up in February and family get-togethers already arranged for next spring, knowing that I won't forget or double-book. I also have school term dates up to summer 2011, so it's great to be able to put them down now for planning ahead. I would much rather sort out next year's calendar now, than in December or January when I am so busy with Christmas and New Year things. Before I started buying these calendars I always felt as though my life fell of the edge of a cliff at the end of December and I often didn't find time to complete the new year's calendar until February, risking missing something. The overlap in dates gives me a smooth transition from one year to the next and I can still look ahead six months in the latter part of the year.

The calendar comes with two sheets of stickers, some of which are US biased, e.g. "Vacation" and "Camp".

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyhome should have one! 31 July 2010
These calenders are a god send. I have been buying these now for at least 2-3 years and will not be going back to any other type. The 5 columns are good as i can keep track of everyones appts etc and also i like the very large pocket at the back for holding appt letters, vouchers etc etc. I even hang a pen from the front of the pouch too so that i always have one to hand.
They are a good size and worth the money. Running from August to Dec the following year means you can put all your appts, birthdays on etc and not miss anything. We also write the other 4 family members in on the last 4 blank columns so that everyone knows who's is who's when looking.
I dont consider these an expense infact they are about the cheapest i have seen for yearly calenders and also because they are so practical they are perfect.
I wont be buying any other type now as these do everything thing i need and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic product 25 Oct 2007
A fantastic calendar for a family to put all their different events, parties and appointments on. I have a family of 5 and I struggled to find a calendar with a space for each family member but this has 5 columns and a large space to write any appointments in for each day, as opposed to other calendars where you have no room to write anything in. I Love it and am buying it again for the third year running !

4.0 out of 5 stars Calendar great, but stickers a let down 5 Nov 2010
By Olga
Format:Calendar|Verified Purchase
I have been buying this sort of calendar for about 5-6 years now, each year I try a different make, so far I have not found a perfect one.
This is one of the better ones. I love the fact that weekends are highlighted, my last calendar did not have it, but the previous one had, and for the whole year I could not get used to it. I like to have my weekends stand out from the weekdays.

I was particularly looking forward to the 500 stickers, but I was badly let down. We had a Charlie and Lola calendar for 2010 (The Wonderful Charlie and Lola 2011 Family Organiser by Lauren Child 30cmx30cm) and it also had stickers, but nowhere near enough in quantity, especially for the school holidays.

This calendar comes with a lot of stickers, but only a fraction of these are actually usable for the calendar, as mostly these are cartoon pictures. The ones I am after are words like "Holiday", "Dentist", "Swimming", "Music Lesson", "Doctor" and so on. There are only a handful of these ad mostly in American format like "Vacation", "Camp" etc. There possibly should have been and empty colourful rectangular stickers included to write the most commonly used words yourself (for example for us "Swimming" and "Music Lesson" every week for the whole year). I ended up printing my own, but it had to be on white, as I could not get colour labels anywhere.

I like the fact that this calendar has quite big spaces to write multiple appointments. In previous one I had difficulty fitting more than 2 per day per person and if I used a sticker - it took the whole box with nowhere to write anything else. If for example it was this person's birthday, you could not add any other text, let alone another sticker.

Every year I look for that perfect family calandar and for the last couple of years I have ended up settling for this one. Yes, it functions adequately as a family calandar but it's a long way off ideal.

The pocket is not deep enough - only a few inches or so which limits its use for larger notices or notes I would like to use it for (larger party invites, A4 size memos from school, etc etc... The space per day under each name is a little on the smallish size - I would like it a bit larger as frequently I cant fit all info I need in that space, running into other "squares" on the calandar which kind of defeats the purpose.

To comment on a point another reviewer mentioned, the "Mum's" title is 1950s-ish but I'll assume they are being tongue in cheek rather than sexist.... I can just about overlook that.

I dont have any use for the stickers and although I am American and dont have problems with the American terminology of "vacation" or "camp", there could be a better use for them. More general stickers maybe - colour coded so the user could highlight as needed. For ex, a red tag to mark on a day for expected delivery, a green tag to stick on a day for recycling collection.... whatever. That way, a quick glance in the morning could make it really easy to scan what was happening.

These companies need to speak to families before designing these as I think it would be easier to make a more useful family planning calandar.

Meets a need but doesnt excite.
