Product Description

Product Description

Each year, approximately 1.5 million people in the United States and Canada are diagnosed with cancer. This is one family's story. When Brian Fies's mother was diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer, he and his two sisters struggled with the effects of her illness and her ongoing recovery from treatment. Brian processed the experience in his journal, which took the form of words and pictures. The story that came to be known as "Mom's Cancer" first gained notice on the internet. It was posted anonymously, with the intention of sharing information and insights gained from his family's experience. Word of Brain's website spread, until it found its way to Abrams and, ultimately, a book contract. Since then his story has been nominated for the comic book industry's highest honour; an Eisner Award for Best Digital Comic, which is a category that was created with his work in mind.

About the Author

Brian Fies is a freelance writer and artist who lives in northern California with his wife, twin teenage daughters, and three cats. In 2005, his original Web version of Mom's Cancer was nominated for the Eisner Award in the category Best Digital Comic. This is his first graphic novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Touching and real, 27 Aug 2007

This is a book that looks at cancer with a slightly different slant. It's the story of Brian's Mom and her voyage with cancer. I originally read it online but decided that I had to buy the book.

Honestly, it made me cry occasionally, reminded me of both the good and the bad days and reassured me that I wasn't alone in my voyage.

I'd recommend it to anyone who has had any dealings with cancer.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent account of a journey through cancer for patients and family, 16 Aug 2006

(REAL NAME)
There are a lot of `my struggle with cancer' books available. Mom's Cancer, by Brian Fies must count as one of the most original. On learning of his mother's cancer diagnosis Brian Fies began journaling his family's experience as an online graphic novel, or what I used to call a comic book.

Forget Desperate Dan or Captain Marvel, this a vivid and arresting look at the effects of cancer on the patient and their family. The graphic novel format is very expressive and Fies cleverly uses imagery to communicate the emotional experience of cancer. A radiotherapy session is depicted as the helpless patient strapped down in Dr Frankenstein's laboratory waiting for the thunderbolt to strike! As well as the emotional toll on the patient the stresses and strains on the family, and how they dealt with them, are vividly told. I highly recommend this book as an insight to what cancer patients go through
