Lets face it for those of you who have ever read anything about Joan Crawford then you will know that she was a very strict mother, she was under a lot of pressure to keep her carreer going and Cristina was a handful, from what I have read and I have read quite a lot about Crawford then I would say 60% of this film is true, though it was filmed and screenplayed for dramatic efect, if you have ever read the book Mommie Dearest it is nowere near as scathing as the film script was written, however if you bear this in mind then the film is very entertaining. The original actress to play the role was Ann Baxter who filmed for about a week before she decided she could not play Crawford in such a bad light and walked off the set. She was replaced with Faye Dunaway who did a great job on the film, though not exactly built like crawford in stature or features she does a good job. I like this film and you have to remember that if Joan was a saint it would not make such good viewing. So many funny lines in this its really worth a watch.

Containing possibly some of the best lines in a motion picture ever, this film is worth watching for the towering, over-the-top and high camp portrayal of a true diva by another true diva! It is pure pantomime from start to finish and is perfect viewing with a group of friends - watch it before they arrive so you know all the best lines and shout them out. Don't watch it with the idea that this is a serious film about the life of Miss Joan Crawford, dive in and enjoy a truly guilty pleasure.

Great watching Faye Dunaway as Joan Crawford and I have to agree with others that it was a bit over the top, shame Christina did this book after death, as poor Joan could not agree or disagree.
Even the film shows this little girl as a bit of a brat; and Joan as very competitive towards her, not a good mix for a happy relationship.
I have seen Christina being interviewed in real life film and she oozes hatred and self pity, if what she says is true about Joan's behaviour toward her surly the book she has written should have been cathartic in cleansing her of all that bitterness so she could move on with her own life; unless she revels in martyrdom.
A great OTT movie

I think that Faye Dunaways performance in this film is one of the best ever captured on film. I really disagree with reviewers who say that the film is OTT. I know from experience the sudden rages an abusive parent can soar into, and I find it very offensive when people think that it is funny to see a child go through this emotional and physical torment and label it as "Camp". Faye deserved at least an oscar nomination for her vivid performance in this film, but instead was mocked and ridiculed. One of the most underrated performances in film history, and one of the most memorable.

The movie shows you the emptiness that is behind the fasade of some Hollywood stars and how their children suffer. It was hard to watch at times, but touching to see how her daughter could finally find peace by showing the world the truth and standing up for herself.

This overheated - rather too long - camp melodrama is enjoyable and rather amusing if you don't take it seriously. Faye Dunaway wasn't too keen on her own over-the-top performance and blamed the director for not holding her back. That said it is beautifully filmed, designed and in general acted too by the supporting cast - although much more extreme (and unconvincing) than Christina Crawford's actual account in the biography on which it is based. Certainly not to everyone's taste, this legendary cult film is recommended for lovers of high camp everywhere and especially ones not looking for realism, accuracy or restrained performances. So - if you sympathise with the divine Joan's aversion to wire coat hangers! Or have an urge to massacre your rose garden! Yeah - Christina get me the axe!

The book hit the head-line, The kiss and tell story of Loan Crawford daughter exposing child abuse. It is not always easy watching and it give an insight into the screen ledge of the Hollywood era and what the studios would do to keep them happy and also cover up when things went wrong. I think if you put it in context of attitude of the time, (slapping kids was acceptable), bring them up under strict rules and keeping them in line the norm. It shows how over stepping the mark was ignored or swept under the carpet. Faye Dunaway is brilliant in it and I love her for it. I know it's become a "mocked" film and "mimicked" film in many gay bars or copied by drag acts around the world. But I think it is worth a watch and I felt both sorry for Joan and her daughter by the end.

Great acting but a tad OTT. Christina was no saint but didn't deserve the mental and physical abuse depicted by her OCD, self confessed alcoholic mother either. As with any autobiographical film take this one with a pinch of salt. Too many people who knew Joan (in real life) denied any abuse whatsoever, yet Bette Davis herself was apparantly in agreement with the book (as it is well documented her and Joan were rivals) so no surprise there.

Lastly if you watch this film see how Christina would mimic her mother and the whole competitiveness was there at an early age (glad they made that one clear at least coz that says alot about someone's character). So make your own judgements but whatever you do DO NOT use wire coat hangers or Joan will get really p~d!!!
