About the Author

Born in Philadelphia in the 1950s, Charita's early career was in music, and soul music in particular. She moved to England in the late 1970s, formed an all-girl group called The Street Angels and had a Top 30 hit. Her life was transformed overnight when her soul food restaurant was featured in Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares - he loved her, he loved her food, he loved her restaurant, but he hated the way she ran her business. She has appeared on Saturday Cooks and BBC's Saturday Kitchen.

I bought this book last week after Charita came and did a cooking demostration in my town. The recipes are easy to follow with loads of large, bright photos. Some background info on her growing up and family cooking make this book a must have. I've stickered all the recipes I want to make and it's nearly the whole book!

This is a great book, and in my opinion has been overlooked as a cookbook by too many people!

Its got some great basic recipes, its not fussy, and is just good home 'soul' food cooking. I've spent some time in the USA and there are some recipes that i've been trying to find - they are in this book and all changed in terms of measurements for the UK.

I'd recommend this book highly!

I bought this book due to the reviews it had received. Fantastic recipes, only problem is, they often call for 'Mommas' cajun seasoning'. Okay, i thought, not a problem - as in the book it says that you can order it from her website. I went to do this and found out that her restaurant has closed down and that I could no longer buy it!!! Now this isnt the end of the world as the recipe for the seasoning is featured in the book, but for a beginner like me I would have preferred to have bought it ready made.Lovely recipes though and I will definitely be giving most of them a go!

A delightful taste of "soul" cooking. The interweaving storyline makes this much more than just a cookbook, it's a family journey too!! A must have on your cookbook shelve.

I originally borrowed this book from the public library, after browsing at home decided I wanted to try most of the recipes so purchased a copy for home. So far only done the southern fried chicken, very tasty!

This is the kind of food that will make everyone go mmmm when they try it. Easy food to share with friends etc.

Been looking for a book like this for a long time.

American southern soul food it most deffinately is!

Our family have tasted Momma Cherri's delicious cuisine some years ago when we were in Brighton, and I must say that we followed one of her recipes and our taste buds took us back to that wonderful day.

Her Momma’s Cujun Seasoning mix we use most of the time. Highly, highly recommended.
