This review is for the collectors edition of the Ultravox EP "Moments From Eden".Specifically, the 10" vinyl and cd release(purchased via the band's web site)that can only be described as a piece of art.The music comprises 20 minutes of extra tracks from the second European leg of the "Return To Eden" tour. The first leg was captured for posterity on the 2010 live release Return to Eden. That was great to finally get a full Ultravox concert on cd and dvd.
Thus the tracks released on this EP are songs added to the tour for Europe. As always they are well performed and recorded. It's a real treat for fans to have a live version of "Mr.X-Herr X",the atmospheric track from the Vienna: Remastered Definitive Edition album. The three other tracks are also most welcome,"New Europeans" is a personal favourite. But it is the package, the quality of paper and printing and the heavyweight vinyl that comes with this release and has me in awe!
The 10 inch gatefold sleeve has the cd mounted inside on a foam stopper and the glowing red record is enclosed in a nice paper sleeve. There is also an 8 page artbook with graphics for each of the songs on the EP.Whilst there is not a large amount of music included here it is the actual product you hold in your hands that this release is about. It would look very boring on an ipod screen!
All Ultravox fans will be grabbing one of these once they find out how high the quality of this item is.Buy a copy, support the continued release of music in the physical format and make your own mp3 with the cd enclosed!
It's a work of art!

Being able to find offerings like these is the main reason I keep my subscription at sites like this up to date! (although I must confess I first found & bought it at another provider's website which I won't name....) Anyway, for anyone who doesn't already know this isn't a just a limp re-hashing of their old 80s material, but a brand new live EP from the 'classic' Can, Cross, Currie & Ure line up of the early to mid 1980s (although to be honest, you'd be hard pressed to tell - the only clue being the applause at the start & end of each song). All 4 tracks are of course intimately familiar to die-hard fans like yours truly and even though none of the songs actually come from the 'Rage In Eden' album after which the EP is named, it's fair to say a somewhat older Midge & company have made a pretty good fist of reproducing them in a modern day setting (especially "Herr X", which features Warren Cann vocalising some of the lyrics in German). The sound quality & musicianship are both superb, Midge can still just about hack it vocally and even the audience sound to be having a good time!
If the forthcoming new studio album is even half as good as this offering, then both hard core fans like me and those discovering them for the very first time have a lot to look forward to!

Moments from Eden 9 May 2011
Format:Audio CD
Recorded live (April 2010) at the Admiralspalast Theatre in Berlin - one of the few preserved venues of the pre-World War II era, 'Moments from Eden' is more than just a document of the new set additions for 2010's Return to Eden 2 tour.

The exquisite physical package, both striking and ornamental, features 10" Red Vinyl, CD and booklet, all presented within its very own textured gatefold sleeve. A collector's item in the making.

The contemporary illustration is courtesy of renown artist Rian Hughes, and is an avantgarde representation of Ultravox's inspirational `art music' mould. The booklet of fine photography documents an architectural romanticism aided by choice picks of Ultravox lyrics.

The EP itself features "New Europeans," "White China," "Loves Great Adventure," and "Herr X," with a version of "The Thin Wall" available as a download only addition. All the tracks exhibited here hold a raw live energy and a challenging style, so intimately guided by a precise fine tuning of sounds; "The Thin Wall" seems to be even more extravagant that it was, finer details more evident with added subtle embellishments, while "New Europeans" rocks harder than it did 30 years ago.

Perhaps the biggest surprise on this release is the quality and perfection of "Herr X." While many may have expected this to be a necessary extra - it has ended up being one of the stand out tracks. What is uniquely special about this particular version - aside the obvious vocalizing in German, is the characteristics of that grand auditorium, that appear to have been captured here. Listen carefully and you'll pick up that natural reverberation that was experienced in the hall and although subtle on this recording compared to actually being there, it really does bring out a satisfying dominant strength in the bass line. The acoustics of this venue really did standout - giving us one of the best sounding gigs on the tour - "Herr X" is testament to that.

In summary, this release captures yet another satisfying Moment from Eden, with visual imagery to enhance the effects.
