Product Description

Book Description

MOMENT OF DESTINY was written to correct a terrible wrong, to heal an old wound.

In July 1940, when the European Democracies collapsed before the Nazi war machine, only Britain stood defiant, but alone and vulnerable. Ambassador Kennedy wrote Britain off as a lost cause.

Churchill decided to show the world Britain's ruthless determination to fight on.

Tragically the issue on which he made his stand was the fate of the French Fleet, then the fourth most powerful in the world. To prevent their falling into fascist hands, Admiral Somerville was ordered to open fire on the French squadron at Mers el-Kébir. 1,300 French sailors died, and a huge opportunity was lost.

This book examines the possibility that Admiral Somerville might have acted in a different manner, in the best traditions of the naval commander on the spot. Suddenly the course of the Second World War begins to change, and with it the history of the entire world.

BARBAROSSA begins on schedule, and when the Russian Winter bites, the Wehrmacht is hundreds of miles east of Moscow.

Rommel is sent not to North Africa, but to the Caucasus.

Pearl Harbour, the Philippines and Malaya are not attacked in 1941, and Japan turns elsewhere. The first atom bomb is not dropped on Japan.....

Unlike the unrelated collection of chapters all too often found in alternative histories, each detailing a single hypothesis, the Author carries his story through to its logical conclusion. One after another, the dominos fall inexorably in another direction.

2.0 out of 5 stars Starts well, but quickly goes downhill, 10 Jan 2009
The book starts well, but quickly goes downhill for any serious alternative history fans. I've stopped reading after the line 'Germany invaded the Soviet Union on 1st March 1941'. The author postulates that a rapproachment with the French fleet at Mers-El-Kebir will lead to an earlier attack on the SU, which of course will not get bogged down in the spring mud because this is alternative history of a different sort - that which ignores such silly things as weather and logistics.

Despite the author saying he changes one thing and things logically flow, the reality, as with many alternative histories, is that the author decided on a favourable outcome and then wrote to achieve that, ignoring reality on the way.

Good with your mind switched off. Not good if you have any historical knowledge of why things happen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reflections on the Moment, 30 Jun 2009

(REAL NAME)
Moment of Destiny: One Day in Oran - An Alternative History of World War IIThis book produces a shortened WW2 with a stronger French presence. Without the British attack on the French Navy, the combined colonial powers follow a different path which results in a massively changed world.Whether Admiral Darlan would have acted this way or not I don't know but it certainly enhances the story. In our universe he was very anti-British, but this was probably the result of the attack. The story as told in this book flows believably and I would have no problem in recommending it to my friends.Anybody who is interested in alternate or parallel worlds should own this book.
