Biography

Architecture in Helsinki have certainly come a long way since the late nineties, when Bird was a gangly kid in a New South Wales country town messing around with his buddies Jamie Mildren and Sam Perry. They moved to Melbourne and soon found likeminded musical souls in Kellie Sutherland and Gus Franklin. The five of them have continued on the Architecture in Helsinki rollercoaster to this ... 4.0 out of 5 stars Summer Songs From Down Under 31 May 2011
By The Wolf TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Architecture In Helsinki do not come from Finland. They
are an Australian ensemble who are described as having
"cult" status in their homeland. This, despite it being
their fourth album, is my first encounter with the band
and the experience has been an entirely pleasant one.

The prevailing mood of 'Moment Bends' is, on the whole,
upbeat and light of spirit. Essentially what we hear here
(here here!) is sparkling electronic pop; all catchy tunes,
bouncy beats and pretty vocals. 'W.O.W.' is a wonderful
example of the band's capacity to take a simple melodic
idea and run with it. The harmonies are delightful; the
pulsing rhythm addictive.

Other highlights would have to include : jolly singalong
track 'Desert Island', which brought early Erasure to mind
for more than a moment; the bouncy, bumptious and very
danceable 'That Beep', which nods and winks blissfully back
to its 80's forebears and the strangely soulful stripped-down
beauty of final track 'B4 3D' (the album's loveliest invention).

Another recording to add to a sun-filled soundtrack for Summer 2011.

Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable listen 9 May 2011
By Kyle Johansen - Published on Amazon.com
This album seems like a logical transition for Architecture in Helsinki, who put themselves on the map with the hyperkinetic 2005 album, In Case We Die. That album was all over the map but was so creative and bursting with energy that it found a home in the headphones of a large amount of new fans. After a slightly calmed down, but no less tame 2007 album, Places Like This, the band has matured nicely on Moment Bends. This is a streamlined collection of pop songs that is uniquely Architecture in Helsinki, though a version that is catered more towards the general public and not just a niche community. I enjoy this album from start to finish but the highlight is definitely YR GO TO. Sleep Talkin and That Beep are also a couple of my favorites. Escapee has that old Architecture in Helsinki feel, while the opener Desert Island lets the listener know immediately that this is a new direction for the band. The single Contact High is solid but unspectacular, which is a nice way of describing this album; it will not set any new standards but is an enjoyable listen that should demand more than a few trips to your stereo over the course of the summer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Audio Crack 4 Aug 2011
By hometown unicorn - Published on Amazon.com

You'll feel embarrassed for liking this for about 30 seconds, before that feeling dissolves into unhinged glee. I definitely had a WTF moment when I heard the opening bits of the first track, "Desert Island", followed by a mild panic attack, thinking that AiH had ditched everything I liked them for. Luckily, by the end of "Desert Island" I was already sold. By "Yr Go To", I had a huge grin on my face, heart pounding in my throat. I love it when a band can still shock and excite me. It would be easy to dismiss Moment Bends as some light pop, and there's definitely heaps of immediate stuff on it but a thousand extra layers that I know will grow gradually the more time you give it.
5.0 out of 5 stars LONG LIVE THE 80s!!! 1 Mar 2013

These folks are true musicians. Very different from their previous album but I embrace the evolution. Go and search "Contact High Acoustic Live" on YouTube and you will see how talented they are when outside of a studio using bare instruments on the street without any amps. "That Beep" makes me want to do the Robot. The only song I don't really care for is the last, "B4 3D." Ten out of eleven is pretty solid!
